Susan Cavan 1842 is definitely into Parish records for S Ireland and you will need to know the barony, parish and whether Catholic or Protestant before you can go any further. These records should be accessible through Dublin, so try a holiday there sometime. Theresa on the other board is only helping with Irish records post 1864. The army though is interesting and your ancestor would have joined the British army as Ireland was part of Britain until 1922. The good news is that you should be able to access those records through the National Archives at Kew but the bad news is that you will need to know the regiment as all army records at that time have been recorded at Kew via the regiment. I have just been researching all day at Kew for a soldier of this era but because I do not know the regiment I am looking for I spent the whole day looking but getting nowhere. You may still be lucky and find him through the chelsea pensioners route. Try the PROCat on line, the catalogue site for the old PRO now known as the National Archives: www.pro.gov.uk You can access some names online that may be in the National Archives but not the records and to do this you usually need to have a readers ticket. Do you live near enough Kew for a visit? You have a good bit of info already on your relatve and armed with this info I strongly recommend a visit to Kew. If you do not live nearby then come to London for a few days break near Kew, plenty to see! You have reached a point with this one where only you can do the work. I have researched a Crimean War veteran and it took me many days at the Kew NA, but very rewarding. The staff are helpful if you are unsure as to where to start. His attestation papers will give place of birth and date of birth Janet |

Hi Bernadette, Go to Tips Board and look for Theresa (from Cork)'s thread. There you will find listed a lot of sites for searching in Ireland. Margaret |

One GC member started up a thread on the TIPS BOARD for all Irish Genealogy web links - she has put a lot of effort into it and it's very very useful. Good luck |

Trying to find any links with my great grandfather who was born in county caven in1842, he joined the army in 1867 when he was 25 years old, possibly had a brother, was a Gunnery instructor and saw active service in the Ashanti war whilst on the Sir garnet Wolsley staff the commander of the british force. later he was awarrent officer in the southern div, royal artillery and resided in Campbelton Scotland as a serg Major of the Argyle and Bute Militia. He married in Gibralter, a Sarah Anne Shipley in the Cathedral. This is a difficult task but just hoping there may be a long lost link somewhere. Thanks |

Accessing actual Irish records on line is very hit and miss. A few counties have some info on line but most do not. Northern Ireland will be the same as Britain. Post 1864 for Southern Ireland you will need to access Dublin for the records but pre 1864 you are into parishes and that means understanding something about Ireland and its records. A good first foray is to try Genuki Ireland: www.genuki.org.uk/big/irl/index.html This will lead you on to other sites. Janet |
