Hi Sharon Familysearch has quite a bit of useful information for you. It gives Lucy's parents as Henry and Elizabeth. lucy also has a sister called Fanny Hannah DOB 20.10.1852 Christend in Southampton on 14.11.1852 Louis Johns dad was called William Nelson McRill. There probably a lot more info there if you look. and its Free Also FreeBMD has a possible marriage for William Nelson McRill and a marriage for Henry and Elizabeth Riddle Jane |

Hi Sharon The sites that Pauline suggested are free and though they are works in progress you can often be lucky and find some information there. She has left out the . that has to go in the space she has left. To add to her list, the LDS Church, both on their website and also at the local churches throughout the world have the most complete set of records. You can usually go there to get the indexes necessary to be able to order birth, death and marriage certificates which is usually the next step in finding the previous generation. The 1881 census index can also be searched at their site. The site is www familysearch org If you live in England and can get to London the Family Records Centre, 1 Myddelton Street, London has all the BMD indexes. Also the National Archives at Public Records Office, Kew, Richmond, Surrey also contains lots of records. Both of those places have websites also but contains mostly info about ordering documents by mail etc. Local libraries also often have a lot of genealogy information. I live in Canada so these resources except for the LDS Church are not available to me in person, but sometimes you will find a lot of people willing to help on this site. I was able to do a fair amount of digging using free resources but in the long run you have to be able to spend some money. It can be a fairly expensive hobby. Good luck with your hunt Sandra |

So far all I've managed to do is find out that my grandmother (on my mother's side) maiden name was McRill. Her christian name was Nora(h). her married name was Dines. I'm trying to trace her mother and father who I have been told were called Lucy McRill(nee Riddle) and Louis John Samuel McRill. I've also been told that my grandmother had a sister and i believe a niece called Lucy which is hampering my search. My grandmother hails from Southampton but I've been told that her father may have come from Scotland. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be really grateful. The last known address I have for my grandmother is 13 St Monica Road, southampton (sorry can't remember district). I've tried the free sites recommended by another member but as soon as I find a record that looks promising I get asked to subscribe. Can anyone help? |
