Thank you that's helped a lot. I've just had a quick look for Daniel Barr and found one still alive in 1901 age 69!!!!!! though unfortunately it still says he was born in Ireland ? Slight discrepancy in age though age 43 in 1881 and 69 in 1901. Will have a more detailed look when I've a few names to check. Thanks |

GRO fiche go back to 1837 only, England and Wales. Pre 1837 you are into parish records and need to have accessed a census to establish county of birth. Pre 1837 most of the work is done through CRO(County Record Offices) You can do a very limiting search online through IGI which is not as reliable as many people seem to think and even when you find ancestors on the IGI you should always check your information with the original registers which are only to be found at the record offices. Many people are not on the IGI and a lot of eroneous material is creeping on to the IGI because few people are checking the facts. Census for 1891 are being done professionally and can be bought for many counties, not all. For most you need an address. Most of these census are in the CRO although if you join a family history society and I belong to 4 then you can often use the expertise of the volunteers who have their own 1891 census in alphabetical order. I strongly recommend people joining the Family History Associations of their counties of interest to obtain more help from people who have learnt their subject over many years experience. The 1901 Census is on line through www.pro.gov.uk You can browsew to find relative for free but you then pay approx £1 per page to see individual+family but the minimum credit charge is £5. I hope this is of some help to you. Sadly not everything is on the internet and what there is on the net you have to check, check and check again. LDs will pull in records for you at a small fee if you know what you want. The 1881 Census is the only Census that was done nationally in alphabetical order. All the other census are county by county and most are not alphabetical but by address only which means trying to tie your relative into some address at census time. But as I said earlier many family history societies have done their own census alphabetically and charge for this. Janet |

Thanks for info. Am still fairly new to all this (my brother having done virtually all the searching) but where could I search the 1891 and 1901 census? All I got from LDS was 1881. How far back does the BMD's at the fische files at the local library go back to? Thanks everyone. |

State Irish records did not start before 1864 so pre 1864 is very hit and miss on Irish sites.Try Genuki Ireland for starters. Therese is not doing anything pre 1864. The implications for looking at Irish records pre 1864 are vast! It usually means a visit to Dublin or Irish rellies prepared to do some ground work! You also need to know a bit more info than just Ireland. You do need to know the Barony, county and parish and whether Catholic or Protestant. If you know this much you could also try your nearest LDS centre which will pull in Irish records for you at a very reasonable price. Have you found them on the 1891 and 1901 census? Later census may give you more than just Ireland. Janet |

A lot of Irish records seem to be missing. Were not a lot of the records for Ireland lost in 1922 when some building in Dublin was burnt down? Pauline |

Help can anyone please look up a marriage believed to have taken place in Ireland between Daniel BARR born c 1838 in Ireland and Margaret ? born c 1840 in Ireland According to 1881 Census they were aged 43 and 41 respectively and born in Ireland. Their eldest child listed was Margaret aged 16 at time of Census so reckon they must have married before 1865 and maybe older children Don't know if this marriage can be looked up without knowing whereabouts they come from. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. |
