Inconsistent age in 1891 census

My ggparents' ages were consistent in 1881 and 1891, then aged only 7years and 5 years by 1901. The odd year discrepancy is nothing and very common.

I have found inconsistancies in the 1901 from ther 1891 census but assumed if my great grandfather was anything like his son with a healthy disrespect for things official and with lots of children I just think that he put the ages down roughly and had them all born in Leeds wheras earlier censuses show that they were not all born there, if their birthdays were after the census date that could make a differance

Don't know for sure, but I guess that one calculates the year by simply subtracting the age from the census year, whereas the other (more correctly) allows for the fact that the census is taken in the early part of the year, and therefore there is a 75% chance that the census date was before the birthday. Therefore, the earlier date is probably the best guess.

Why do many members of my (13 strong) gg grandmothers family appear to have a DOB 1 year earlier in the (FreeCEN transcript) 1891 census compared to 1881 and 1901? Thanks, Barry
