My ggrandfather served from 1873 until 1880 when he was discharged for medical reasons, where would I find any information on the 17th Lancers? Any help would be appreciated. |

If you put "17th Lancers" into Google you get over 2,000 hits. You could try this one http://www. regiments. org/milhist/uk/cav/D17b(L).htm (remove a couple of spaces) It has a link "How can I search for a family member" or something. |

Shirley, Have a look at PROCAT - the PRO's online catalogue. I've checked quickly for references and found at least one which might be relevant WO 25/3892 - containing 'Discharges under Special Circumstances'. By looking at this stuff you can often discover incidental information about the regiment and make a good guess as to where your man might have been at a given time. If you're too far away from Kew to get there yourself, check out the references and post the ones you're interested in on this board and some kind person might be able to take a look for you. Don't know when I'm going again, but ping me privately if you wish! Regs Jane |

If it helps, the 17th amalgamated with the 21st, possibly after WW1, Derek in France |
