A latter day postman I would have thought, travelling around by coach & horse or just horse to all parts of the country.

Stuart I have carriers in my tree also.1901 census stated A general carrier employment status own account.i believe he delivered between skipsea and driffield and pocklington. His brother was a carrier so I think it was a family business.I have yet to find what they delivered .One delivered from Coach & Horses Mytongate(hull) to Brough on Tues & Fri. I found these details on a web site one page said town so I don't think my lot went for many overnights Jan

ok thanks, may make sense as he is somewhat bizarrely missing off the 1851 census even though there is a chil of 1. At first I thought he had died/left the the family but he reappears again in 1881!! Maybe it was a very long delivery lol Thanks Stu

Carrier as in delivery man (horse and cart or whatever). Country probably as in all over the place as opposed to in a town?? Just a stab in the dark. Jools
