I've just rung Southport Register Office and found that you can get a certificate from there, if you give name date of death etc. But I was also told that you probably get as much information from the War Graves Commision as you do on the certicate however, You will get his name, rank and regiment date of death, age but no date of birth cause of death would be died of wounds or Killed in Action Sandi

At the PRO, there are a small number of French/Belgian death certificates for British soldiers who died in hospitals in those countries. If desperate, you might find something there - but I stress, it is a small collection. Regs Jane

The death certificate won't be on the indexes. There is another index purely for soldiers who died overseas.......I think.

Hi Sue where was your soldiers death registered? I know the date mine was killed, but don't know which registration district to look for his death under - he died in France but came from Leeds (have not found him where I expected him to be on 1837online) Sharon

I'm researching my g-g uncle who was killed in action during the first world war. I have his details from the commonwealth war graves commission site, but I was wondering where his death would have been registered and how I would go about requesting the certificate. He was killed in Aire outside of Calais in France thanks Sharon
