I have been to Salford records office today and they cannot find any marriage records for them. Her prev husband was Richard Proctor. I dont know what else to do any ideas? Jan x

hi janet - i am by no means an expert on this but have you considered that they may have been living together and she took his name without actually marrying? also have you checked who it says is the head of the household on the census? just a couple of ideas, hope it'll help lianne P.S. if he is the childrens father, then maybe he had another wife somewhere else - do a search for his name on the census without the address - probably in the same town tho. i have heard of a case like this before - the man had an official family - wife and two kids, and had a mistrresss on the side with a couple of kids - complicating the tree no end lol sorry if this confuses matters lol

hi Lianne I am glad of any ideas. I have seen the original census on fische at the history museum It puzzled me as to why it say relation to head of house wife and there is no head of house. I can't find any Joseph Kellys in the area unless that wasn't his real name I have even checked the electrol roll for 1902 but they dont live at that house anymore! What a puzzle any more ideas are gladly accepted Jan x

hi again i may be complicating matters and leading you completely up the wrong tree but if she said there was a head of household (the missing man) but you can't find him anywhere and they had moved on soon after the census, then i would think that her children were illegitimate, if you had ruled out his being absent through work etc. have you checked for him anywhere else in the county (if he's not in the surrounding parish)? just so you know - i'm only a newbie at this so don't take my word as gospel - as some more experienced members for help good luck lianne
