Hi, if anyone has either of theres censuses, could you look someone up for me please ? Am looking for a JOHN MEAKINS, born circa 1853 in Potterspury. Am interested in the other members of his family, ie parents and siblings names. Many Thanks NB there are a few John Meakins born within a few years either side, but I'm pretty sure my one was born Q3 1853

Have you tried Alan Clarke's site? www(.)northants1841(.)fsnet(.)co(.)uk He has details of 1871 census (think it's still free) and loads of Births, deaths & marriages. Steph x

Thanks for the advice guys; had already looked at both sites, haven't found anything relevant (yet) on the (excellent) Potterspury site. I've mailed Alan Clarke, hopefully he'll have some info for me :o) Incidentally, he has the 1841 census not, as far as I know, the 1871 one (hence the name of his site :o) )

Hi Paul, Alan Clarke does have an 1871 Northampton index, with over 22,000 names, though I do note he doesn't have Pottersbury covered! Steph x

Thanks for searching for me. I've started the enormous task of transcribing names from the parish records, and I hope to get to the 1850s at the next visit, so hopefulyl I'll find him there. Another contact has told me that His parents were John Meakins and Caroline (Green) and I'm pretty sure I've found them, and another generation back, so just need to prove this John's parentage. Thanks again :) Incidentally Maz, the list of John Meakins that you got - which census were they from ?

Steph

Steph Report 12 Mar 2004 13:21

Paul, the Meakins listed by Mazzie are 1851 census. Incidentally, there's are a Caroline Meakins listed on the 1851 census, as well. Steph

oh right 1851, that makes sense, thanks. I have HUGE list of baptsisms and marriages for Meakins arrived this morning from a chap called alan Clarke (previously mentioned). Doesn't have my John's baptism though. I've found the marriage between John's parents John and Caroline, it was in 1852, so the Caroline Meakins in 1851 is someone else - no doubt a cousin (there's dozens of Meakins). I do wonder why I'm putting so much emphasis on this... the Meakins line is a fairly minor on for me (Great Grandmother on Mothers side).

I get the same, Paul, with even minor 'players' in my tree! It's that thirst for knowledge that got us all started in the first place! Listen, I'm in Northampton and the census's are held at the central library, which is in the town centre. I get there about every week. If you need some checking done, give me a shout. Steph x

Steph, Thanks for the kind offer... if I get stuck I might take you up on it. I also may make the trip myself some time... I'm only in Milton Keynes. I started transcribing Parish records yesterday at the MK library, am going back tomorrow (I may have alreayd mentioned that, it's my age you know ;-) My tree goes all over the place at the moment. Mainly sideways once you get back a few generations. Having the most trouble with my paternal lines (SMITH !! and Hall). Thanksfully most of them are fairly local so far, Beds Bucks and Northants, only my paternal Grandmother is from further afield - Surrey. Thanks again Paul

I know it may seem a bit rude but can I but in on your thread Paul ? I'm having problems tracing the Rogers side of my family and can only seem to get as far as Enoch Rogers b.1828 in Earls Barton. He married Sally (or Sarah )Langley. Can Steph help at all ? I'm in Lincolnshire so this is the only source I can try at the minute. I'd be really grateful and apologies for interrupting/ Mary Brooke

Hi Mary, I can check Earls Barton census fo you, 1841. E-mail me , and I'll have a look! I'm only going to the central library, I'm afraid , the only info they have there are the census returns. If you have an address, it would make it a bit easier! If not, don't worry. Steph
