Samuel Thope, b 1886/1887 (think ive found his birth, but not entirely sure), married Florence Ada Reason Dec Qtr 1911 (Mansfield) and they had Florence Jessie b. 1912 and Alice Azubah b1914 (both in Mansfield, Nottingham). He died 3/10/1918 in action. His mother and father were Mary Jane and Thomas Thorpe, still alive in 1918, as they are mentioned as Samuel's kin (living in Pleasley Hill, Nottinghamshire) on CWGC. Had 2 other sons, Frank and George, according to my auntie. They married Mabel and Lucy respectively. I cannot find them on 1881, 1891 or 1901, and ive done the actual paid searches to find them, but still no luck. Please can anyone look them up for me, i'm desparate to find them! Thanks very much Nicola

Hi Nicola, Have you any idea when his parents might have been born or if they came from Nottingham originally and whether the brothers were older and might have appeared on 1881. Gen

Nicola, Have you got Samuel & Florences' marriage certificate? Do you know the occupation of Thomas Thorpe as this would narrow it down quite a bit when hunting through the census. Emma.

Glen, yes i'm pretty certain that Thomas and Mary Jane came from Nottinghamshire, and their parents too. I don't know if Frank and George were older or younger, unfortunately Thanks for your reply Nicola

Ann, It seems quite likely, yet its Staffordshire, if it was Notts then i'd be certain it was them! even if it was them, how could i find out how/when they came to Nottinghamshire?? Thanks very much Nicola

Crista Report 5 Apr 2004 20:59

Nicola, It might not necessarily be true that Samuel's parents were still alive in 1918. On my grandfather's listing on the CWGC site it mentions his father and he'd been dead 10 years! Crista

er .. hmmm .. well. There's a Thomas THORPE marriage Staffs on FreeBMD but no potential partners attached (grrr) Marriages Sep 1885 Thorpe Thomas Stafford 6b 5 I guess we need to nail them in the 1901 (BIG SIGH). I could not find any other potentials in 1891 with the same credentials. Fetches alcohol before going to decoder ... Ann

Alcohol, hmm, good idea! the 2 marriages i found were: Tom Thrope Nottingham Dec Qtr 1887 7b 582 Thomas Thorpe Mansfield Mar Qtr 1888 7b 07 Found this birth, which i thought fitted nicely: Thomas Thorpe Mansfield 7b 47 Jun Qtr 1861 I won't rule them out just yet, but will definitely make a note of the one you found for me! Thanks!! Nicola

Christa- I presumed that they would still be alive since they were mentioned on it, so thanks for that! Nicola

Thanks again! Ive got the Iron Moulder Samuel, wrong family AGAIN :( not sure about the others, i'll check. What could Samuel or Thorpe be mistranscribed as?? Thorpe is a common name, so you'd think that that wouldn't be mistransribed. My Dad's from Nottinghamshire, and he says Mansfield and Pleasley Hill are in the same area, so its likely that the family was from the Mansfield are. Thanks for all your help, Nicola

Annie Report 5 Apr 2004 22:03

Don't take anything for granted in transcription. I've found WALL as HALL, SMITH as YMITH, BANKS as RANRS. THORPE could be all manner of stuff. Old fashioned T's looked like J's or S's in Copperplate. I'm on my third drink now so it's all looking a blur! xx Ann xx

Lol, that's probably the best way for it to look! i'll try different variations then! Thanks, Nicola
