Have just bought an 1851 census disc for uk. Am totally unable to access other occupants info! On ancestry.com you can view the census form(I,m sure most of GC now that) I was daft enough to think that the discs from Genealogy.com would have the same facility.Perhaps I'm doing something wrong!!!! Hope someone will read this & give me some tips. All advice greatfully received. Cheers Joyce I suspect I've wasted c£20

Perhaps what you've bought was an 1851 name index. A complete census for the UK would cost far more than £20, I'm afraid. The 1841 census for Kent cost £30. Jan.

Thanks for your reply Jan, The disc cover does say "census records UK 1851" I am able to get info on each person but not as a household. A bit disappointing really, ah well , never mind , live and learn!! Cheers Joyce

Hi, Jan Just checked the price, it cost $49.99 so that's about £30-ish or so. Not cheap are they?? Cheerio Joyce

Hi David It need not be a complete waste. If you find any names that you think are yours, your will have the piece & folio number, which you will then be able to ask someone with that census to look at the info for you. Hope this makes you feel better! Lynda

Hi David Why dont you have a go trying to sell it on ebay, i'm sure there is someone that would be interested in it. I bought the Wiltshire 1851 census for about £25 from s&n And at first I could only find lists of names. But then other half realized that the actual census pages had to be loaded seperatly. So now I have to try and find the name and then go into photo image to try and find them. A lot of people half asked me for look ups and it is very hard to search and feel awful having to say most of the time "sorry, but I still havnt worked out how to use it yet. So perhaps you do have the census transcriptions on there somewhere but you might have to see through a different programme. Debbie

Hi David yes, it does make you LOL, Why cant people that make all this computer stuff understand that some of us are not all computer litterate, and need to be told in proper plain english. Perhaps they should have 2 sets of instructions one for the brainy ones, and the other for us dunces. Debbie

glad you raised this subject. I was thinking of buying a Kent disc from the Kent Family History Society. So what would I be able to see on the disc? If its like the 1881 on line on LDS then I will go for it but if it is difficult to understand then maybe not Gloria

Debbie

Debbie Report 30 Apr 2004 22:26

Hi Gloria Well the discs I have are not like 1881. on my wiltshire 1851 there is a name index. and then you have a list of everybody in the household and you can then take the number and search for the real image. Ive had it since before Christmas and it is very time consuming. I also have the wilts 1891 and that is worse it just has images and you have to keep scrolling through pages and pages of census images. I bought the Southampton 1871 and that is brilliant I think the Council done it and you can type in a name and up it comes with all the other people in the household. you can even address search or even occupation. So I think they all very slightly. I have seen people ask for look ups on the board and within a few minutes someone has found them, and I think uh how on earth. Personaly I think I am a bit stupid. Well you aren't stoopid Debbie! I've been doing this stuff for a long time and there's such a variety in what you get on a disk. Some of mine are name indexed and you can get the info very quickly. Some of them are just pdf files with a list of areas covered at the beginning. You'd have to have a very good grasp of local geography to even know where to start looking. And then you just got page after page of ennumerators lists without any index at all. It takes me about 5 hrs to go through one of my sets of disks and makes me more cross eyed than I usually am!
