Hi Patricia Could it be that the birth date was wrong? My mother was surprised to find that her mum's birthdate was the 2nd of December, she'd always believed that it was the 3rd. The birth date on the death certificate might be a mistake. Heather

Hi Patricia I have just been onto the 1837 online site and saved the pages containing the births for Preece in the June and September quarter of 1898. If you would like them email me and i will send them to you. On the June quarter there is are two elsie's listed, Elsie Elizabeth in Hereford Elsie Mary in Atcham, there is also a May Preece listed in Solihull. On the sep quarter there is just an Elsie Maria listed in Dudley. I have just looked on the 1891 and 1901 census and have the 1891 census image if you would like it, they have been listed in the index as Pruce! From the information from the 1891 and 1901 census it looks like they had about 14 children. Regards Sharon

Hi Sharon, I have her death certificate which has her date of birth on it. So I have gone on that info, and have ordered twice from GRO, only to be told that the information did not match up. So now i will look in Worcester. Many thanks. Patricia

Hi Christine, I am here to say sorry to you, I have just tried FREEBMD site and put in info I have on my gran, and it came up with your surgestion of Elsie Maria Preece-Dudley-sept-1898-6c-51. I put in mothers maiden name so will this one match I wonder, the difference in the second name could be due to a mistake in the transcribing i suppose. Is there any way i can find out if the mothers name is Martha. Many thanks to both of you i would never have thought of Worcester. Patricia

Hi Patricia I hope this is not a silly question!, but if you do not have her birth certificate yet, how are you sure of her date of birth and parents names? Have you found them on the 1901 census? Maybe if you think you have found the right birth registration, you should try and order it using just the GRO reference and her name. Regards Sharon

Have you considered that although Elsie's parents may have been known as George and Martha, perhaps George was his middle name and he used his first name on the birth certificate? Also, have you tried contacting the local register office. As you have an exact date and place, perhaps they could locate the entry for you?

Hi Patricia - can we assume that you have tried Sept 1898 Elsie Maria in Dudley 6c 51 in case they didn't register her until July? Cheers Chris After seeing Deborah's reply - what about Elsie Mary June 1898 Atcham 6a 612 ?
