Please can anyone tell me where Prince Regent Street Portsmouth is/was? My Gt Grandfather died at number 14. The death cert gives the sub district as portsmouth and mid Southsea which doesn't help a lot. i am trying to find out where he may be buried. PLEASE SEE MY MESSAGE FURTHER DOWN RE CURRENT SITUATION Ann Glos

I did a google search & the 1899 Kelly's directory has it in Southsea. BUT.........the website link isn't working so that's all I could find.

Ann if you contact the cemeteries staff of Portsmouth City council, I'm sure they would be able to help. You have an address and death date and his name so they have all the information they need. You can contact them by e mail and I think you will find them most helpful.

Hi Ann, Can you tell me his name? If he still had family on the 1901 census and they were still living there I can have a look at the image on Ancestry. I live in Portsmouth so the street names should ring a bell. Julie

Hi Ann, I've had a look at the 1901 census for you and he was at Prince Regent Street. A few of the streets around there, Greetham Street and Blackfriars Road, are still there, but I am pretty sure Prince Regent St is not there anymore. It pretty much in the centre of Portsmouth, not far from the main train station. I am hoping to go to the records office here soon (probably not till next week), and I'll check him out for you if you like. Julie

Hi Ann, Contact Portsmouth cemetery office! As you have a date and address, they should be able to give you the details if he`s buried in Kingston. Highland road records are held by the records office now, but at least you`ll know which cemetery. It wouldn`t be Milton Road as that didn`t open until 1912. Rebecca

Thanks to everyone for there suggestions/help. I will contact the cemeteries dept. Julie, I have his marriage certificate and his death certificate, I just can't find where he was buried or where he was born. Censuses say variously, Dorsetshire or Dorchester, Hounsdown West Totton Hants. I have sent for two birth certs already putting his father William as a checking point, both wrong have another one born in dorchester to send for now. He has been elusive for three or four years since i started looking for him, but I am slowly getting there. Thanks for your offer of a look up at the RO but i have a suspicion you wouldn't find anything new, i really need to be in dorset looking. Unless he really was born in Totton Hants, but then that wouldn't be at Portsmouth RO would it? it would be Southampton. (sigh!!!!) Thanks again Ann Glos

Hi Ann, I don`t know the address, but their phone number is 023 92732559. If you ring them with the death cert details they may let you know there and then, if not they`ll give you the postal address. Rebecca

Julie that is great, I have not been able to get a look up on the 1871, got him on 1881, 1891, 1901. Do you have any more details on that family? i would be so grateful if you have. Ann Glos

Update This is the 2nd time I have tried to put this message on!! Thanks to all who suggested contacting the cemeteries dept. I E mailed them and had an answer straight back. Henry id buried in Kingston cemetery, he is alone in the grave with space for 3 more and I can apply to obtain the rights to the grave if i want. (I don't think I will bother!) There is no memorial apparently but I have the location - Jones Plot Row 6 Grave 3. I also have to thank Julie for finding him on the 1871 census for me, together with 4 siblings I didn't know he had. According to this census he was born in Dewlish Dorset so i can try for his birth cert again. Thanks again to everyone Ann Glos

I should know that things are not always that simple. On Henry's marriage certificate in 1881 his Father William is a Woodsman. On the 1871 census that Julie kindly found Father William is an Ag Lab. I know that it could have still been the same person but there is a William Riggs living with wife mary and two daughters in East Tytherly Hampshire, and he is a Woodsman. the two daughters birthplaces are given as Eling Hampshire On the 1901 Henry gave his birthplace as Totton Hampshire this is near Eling. Other earlier censuses he has given as Dorset and William and Mary were both born in Morden Dorset. So I have a sneaky suspicion that the first family is the wrong one and the Henry Riggs there is the wrong one. (incidentally there were a lot of Henry Riggs born in Dorset, don't know why but maybe they are all linked further back and it is a family name). so I now need to check out William and Mary Riggs in the 1871 and also maybe the 1861 when Henry would have been only about 4 years old. Life is so complicated and I would be pleased to hear any of your opinions.

Ann, I have emailed you direct. I have the 1871 census for Hampshire on CD and I think I have found them in Eling. Julie
