Why don't you contact Southwark History Museum. This is in the Borough High St. SE1. He may be listed in the Kelly's Directories etc, for that area. Or they may be able to give you some advice on your search. Good Luck |

Thanks, everyone. 1871 census and London/Surrey is a real pain at the moment. I think, Zoe, that your suggestion may well be the way forward. I am beginning to suspect that he may have died by 1878 as he doesn't appear on 1881 census. Either that or he wasn't really a vet or that wasn't really his name or .......... and on we go! Everyone's help and suggestions are really appreciated, thanks, Tricia |

Tricia sorry. I was asking because I thought I'd be able to find him in the 1871 on ancestry until I realised that Southwark counted as Surrey then and not London. As you have the address it may be worth asking for someone to look it up for you at the Family Records Centre where the 1871 is street indexed Zoe |

Hi Tricia, no problem, I know what you mean about keeping messages short, I tend to lose the thread if it goes on too long, you know.... who's born when & where etc... Sam |

Zoe, Don't have him on 1871 because can't find anyone who has it. He should show up on it because his daughters wedding was in 1871 and I think she was still living with him. Address given above. Have tried various websites for Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons but can't find anything useful. Thanks, Tricia |

Perhaps he is listed in a trade directory. Alternatively, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons may have old lists with home addresses in their archives? Helen |

Jools, As far as I know he was born in Southwark somewhere or other. His daughter's birth place is given as Lambeth on 1881 census and on her marriage cert her address is given as 16 Pitt Street, St George's Road and the marriage was at the Church of St Jude Southwark. I get very mixed up with these places in London! Sammy - sorry about the mix -up - I try to keep the messages short so it was a bit unhelpful. Best thing would be to find him on 1871 census but I think this is difficult for the area. Regards, Tricia |

You're welcome, I must admit I did think you meant his own marriage cert, so I thought 60 was about right. Hope you find him Sam |

Now, that is very interesting and you have got me thinking! The marriage cert in 1871 is that of his daughter, Agnes who was born c.1849 so John White was probably born about 1829 so in 1901 he would have been about 72 so much as I would like to claim Mr Whittle I don't think I can. Did occupation search on 1881 without success. Was wondering if he might be registered somewhere as a vet in the 1800's but haven't been able to find anything. Thanks for all your hard work - much appreciated Tricia |

I did that search on 1901, John White did not come up, so I left the surname blank John Allen 40 St Pancras London London Paddington Veterinary Surgeons Assistant John Gibbard 39 London Marylebone London S Marylebone Veterinarys Assistant John Lee 35 London Islington Essex East Ham Veterinary Surgeon John Richards 36 Paddington London London Paddington Veterinary Surgeon John Whittle 60 London St Pancras Middlesex Ealing Veterinary Surgeon John Worrow 47 London St Pancras London Shadwell Veterinary Surgeon __________________________________________________ The Whittle one looked promising, here he is on Ancestry Jos W W R Whittle 60 St Pancras, London, England Head Ealing Middlesex Mary Ann Whittle 48 Hayes, Middlesex, England Wife Ealing Middlesex He definitely is a "John", I have saved the image. Obviously we cannot guarantee he's yours, but Whittle could be a mis-transcription Best wishes Sam |

If he was still alive in 1901 you could use the advanced person search and specify an occupation. Sam |

Could anyone advise me where to look for John White who appears on a marriage certificate in 1871 described as a veterinary surgeon. Southwark area of London. Can't trace on 1861 or 1881 census. Thanks, Tricia |
