Can someone please tell me if there was anyone called LINDON or LINDEN living in Roscommon Street, Liverpool in 1881? My gt grandparents gave that street as their address when they married in 1882. I wondered if they were living with a relative. Gt grandad was William John Lindon and I haven't been able to find him in a census (he was a mariner) so I don't know where he was born. Many thanks, Lilian |

Hi Lilian Do you have a rough year that he was born - perhaps calculated from his marriage cert? Much happiness Debi |

Many thanks Debbie and Helen for your replies. Debbie, according to his marriage cert he would be born about 1858 but, if he was born in England or Wales, he wasn't registered. That's why I'm desperate to find him in a census. Helen, I have used the 1881 LDS site but, after reading some of the lookups requested by others, I assumed that some people were able to look up an address rather than a name. Apologies for getting it wrong. Best wishes, Lilian |

Lilian what was his father's name and occupation? Maybe you could try looking for him if he was alive. Sue |

Hi Sue, Williams John's father was John and was deceased when William married in 1882. His occupation was glassblower but I think this may have been exaggerated. He could have been a labourer in a glass works. Lilian |

Rosemary, I do have their marriage certificate and have tried to get some clues from the witnesses but without success. Thank you for your suggestion anyway. Sue, many thanks for looking up the address for me. I really do appreciate the help that people give on GC. Thanks to you too, Crista. Best wishes, Lilian |

Hi Lilian I couldn't see the name Lindon or Linden but I found Roscommon Street in Everton. If you enter the name William Alfbine into the LDS census search you should be able to search the neighbourhood for names connected to your family. Heather |

Hi Sue, William's wife was Sarah Jane Ralph. I think it was her I found in the 1881 at York Terrace working as a servant. I've been able to trace her family back to 1700 in Cumbria but I'm stuck with William John because I don't know where he was born. Hi Heather, Thank you for the info re.Alfbine. That's a new one to me and I'll certainly give it a try. Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply, Lilian |

Hi Lilian Quite elusive your william lol. How about we look for his wife on the 1891 census - which would then hopefully place them together and we could obtain his year and place of birth, then we could trace him on the 1881? Where and when was Sarh born? Much happiness Debi |

Hi Lilian I didn't explain that very well, William Alfbine lived in Roscommon Street so if you look for him, go to his household you can then look at all the houses in the street. Heather |

Hi Debi, I have found Sarah on the 1891 census. She was a widow then and was living with her new husband Richard Southward and her children, Benjamin Lindon and Susan Lindon (my grandmother). There is some doubt about Willam's death because I can't find it in the death indexes or the deaths at sea. There is a rumour in the family that he went to America and never came bacK. That's why I need to find him in the 1861 or 71 census living with his father, John. Hi Heather, I soon realised what you meant when I went on to the LDS site. Unfortunately, it only led me to the even numbered side of the street. Can you tell me how to find the odd numbers? Thanks again to both of you, Lilian |

Hi Lilian There was a Joseph Knagg age 38 born Chorley at 123 Roscommon Street, I hope he will lead you to all the odd numbered houses, he had a daughter Ruth aged 5 born Liverpool if that helps, I don't know if Knagg would be a common name. Also there were two other areas containing the name Roscommon Street, one was Eccles lane, if you look for Sarah Mountjoy age 45 born Ashburton, Devon and David Hitchmough age 35 born Liverpool, you should find both areas. Hello Heather, Thanks for the other names of people who lived in Roscommon Street. I've been through them all but, unfortunately, none gave me any clues about my William John. I'll have to hope I find him on the 1861 or 71. Best wishes, Lilian |

Hi Sue, I also had found the William Lindon living in Durham. I did consider him because he was the right age but he was a grocer (I think) and my William was a mariner when he married a year later in Liverpool. In some cases it's really difficult to decide who is the right one. Thanks for trying anyway. Best wishes, Lilian |
