Hi Debbie I have looked on the 1871 census and Ernest Blackman is not showing on the index. In fact no Blackman families at all in Oxford. Do you know which parish he was born in as 1861 is not indexed and I would have to eyeball search the whole of Oxford City to find him.Any more info you have would be great. Regards Mary |

On 1837 handwritten document looks like he came from (Nabstead - or something like it.) Can e-mail it to you if you want to see what you can make of it. 1859 date of birth on this. Thank you Deb |

Hello again Mary Could you please look on the 1841 Census for James Adams, Born Oxford c 1827. I think his parents would be well off as he later lived at the Manor House, Hampton Gay. All his children had private eduction. It may be like looking for a needle in a haystack, so don't worry if it's too much to ask! Thanks again, Sheila |

Hi Sheila I remember doing the lookup for you some time ago and finding the reference to Jane Adams death, did you get the print from the 1871 census? I think it will be quite a haul to go through the 1841 census to find James as a young man as the census is not indexed and that means "eyeballing " every page which will take hours for a city as large as Oxford. An easier way would be to find James and Janes marriage as they were probably married about 1858,if you can find it and send for the Certificate that will give James's fathers name and probably an address, and an address will make any search very much more simple. Let me know what you think about how to crack this puzzle All best wishes Mary |

Hi Mary Yes I did get your email with Jane's death ref, and the 1971 Census. ( I sent you a reply direct to say thanks). Unfortunately, so far I have been unable to find the marriage ref. I have found the ref. for James' 2nd marriage, so maybe I will send for that cert and see if it gives me any clues. Thanks for your help Kind regards Sheila |

Hi Sheila I was not looking for thanks I got your email ,what I meant about the 1871 census was did you get the print from ofhs because if not I now have the full census and if you would like a print of the entry I could send it to you. I note you have not found James and Jane's marriage have you got this one: Dec Qtr 1858 James Adams /Jane Scutching Aylesbury 3a 641. A possibility perhaps, Aylesbury is not that far from Oxford and many of the villages on the border were included in Oxon censuses. Regards Mary |

Patricia I seem to remember doing this look up about 2-3 months ago and not being able to find them, was there some connection with Aylesbury? If my memory is playing tricks (must expect it as one gets older) let me know and I will look for you. Mary |

Hi Mary, I think you may have looked for me before, as you say its an age thing, But I don't remember Aylesbury that would of stuck in my mind because that is where the ducks come from. My Mary Ann Smith (my Gt Granmother) was born in Launton - Oxfordshire. According to the 1881 census she was aged 25 yrs and living in Aston Birmingham. Her mother Sarah Ann Smith I found in the 1891 census in Aston Birmingham but she was widowed. And my Granmother was living with her as her parents were both dead by this time. Many thanks. Pat |
