I'll be very surprised if it isn't the right birth. Just because she married as Chryst doesn't mean she was born that. After all, she was probably known as Chryst for all but a maximum of 3 months of her life. |

No i havnt bought any certs for Nellie yet as couldnt find her. I hadnt thought that she could have possibly been registered as Wood so i was thinking i should get the cert for that birth you have found and see if it is or isnt her. I need to get her marriage cert anyway to see who she married as didnt give partners surname on index in 1911. Will get this birth cert at the same time to see if its her. Regards, Claire |

Claire - you've got me confused. Why are you going to have to rule out that birth - have you already bought that certificate and therefore confirmed it is not who you are looking for? |

Hi Jools, No i hadnt ruled out that birth but i think im going to have to now. With her marrying in 1911 as Chryst didnt think she would have been registered as Wood but there is a stong possibility that she was now. Thanks for this info Claire |

OK - Elizabeth married Harold Chryst OND 1891. But what if Elizabeth had just given birth? For Nellie to be 9 on the 1901 census she has to have been born AMJ 1891 to JFM 1892. In which case, she could have been born Wood. Have you ruled out the following birth - JAS 1891 WOOD Nellie Sheffield 9c 552 Incidentally that's the only registered birth of an Ellen, Helen or Nellie Wood in Sheffield between JFM 1891 and AMJ 1892. |

Hi Jools, She is older, 1901 census has Nellie aged 9 and Kate Ellen aged 7. Both born Sheffield. Claire |

Is the Nellie you're looking for older or younger than the Kate that Mary found born in 1893? |

Mmmm...I see that Nellie can't be Kate as Kate's on census too! Strange, you would have thought there'd be a Helen somewhere. Mary |

Hi Mary, Kate Helen Chryst is her sister who is on the census with her in 1901. Helen is a common middle name with the Chryst's as they all come from a Helen Chryst. Regards, Claire |

Hi, There's a birth in the FreeBMD for a Kate Helen Chryst in Sheffield in 1893. Nellie is very commonly used for the name Helen, so I would think there's a good chance that this is her. The age and place are about right? Mary |

Hi Elaine and Louise, It says she is aged 9 and born Sheffield. The parents are Karol and Elizabeth Chryst. There are children of Elizabeth's on there from her previous marriage with surname Wood. Karol and Elizabeth married Dec quarter of 1891 so Nellie was born after they married. They had two other children together, Kate and Maurice, I have found births registered for both of these two. I wouldnt have thought they would have registered Nellie after their marriage with Elizabeth's previous husbands surname but i suppose its something i must check out. Thank you louise for your kind offer to look at this for me, i do appreciate it. Regards to you both Claire |

Are there any clues from who else is listed in the census? Sometimes births were registered under different surnames to the father or the mother, particularly if the parents were not actually married. I'm having similar problems trying to track down the birth records of an illegimate great uncle. I'm going to the FRC later this afternoon to try yet again to track him down. If you see this message and can reply giving more detail before 2pm, I'd be happy to do a quick look up for you. |

Cheers Tracey ...I didn't know when it actually became compulsary ! ... I know they had incentives before that ... like fines etc if you didn't register. If the census entry gives you an idea where she was born, you could try the local parish records .. see if she was Christened ? Elaine :-) |

Hi Claire The records office in Southport told me it wasn't compulsory until 1927 so it's possible she wasn't registered. Regards Tracey |

Just wondered if anyone has a similar problem. On the 1901 census i have a Nellie Chryst aged 9. Ive searched and searched for a birth for her but cannot find anything. Ive tried different spellings of Chryst but still no luck. Ive just found her marriage in 1911 as Nellie Chryst so she did exsist. Is it common to have no birth recorded? Regards Claire |
