Thanks very much Rosemary.I was reading the messages about how the records have been mistranscribed. I am searching for Alfred Henry MARSDEN born 1859 Preston in Lancashire he married Elizabeth SUTHERLAND in Deptford in 1883 and was a Police Constable. On the 1881 census I found a Alfred Marides in the Police Station at Greenwich, thought if I looked at the actual transcription I would see MARSDEN not MARIDES long shot. Ref is RG11 0720/116 page 14. Thanks Paul ps e-mail address sent direct |

Paul, You are right. You cannot access the image itself without being a member. Sorry I didn't take it that far before. It will let you view "other family members" and "neighbors" in text form. I will pull the image for you. Send me an email with the family you are looking for. Include your direct email address. Rose |

As far as I can tell, the transcription is free, but you need to be a subscriber to access the image - is this right, or am I missing something? Regards, Hannah |

To those having trouble accessing the 1881 records: I am a subscriber but I entered the site without logging on to see if I could access the 1881 census. Use site address www ancestry com. There are 2 ways you can enter. At the bottom center of the home page you can click on the UK Census Collection. Scroll down and pick which 1881 census you want to view, then enter your information OR Choose Search Records tab Enter the name of the person you are looking for Select the country and county, then record type. In this case, choose census. Click on Search. It should then show you the census record years that match your criteria. The 1871, 1891 and 1901 will have little locks next to them meaning you need to be a subscriber to access. The 1881 does not. Select 1881 and it will give you the list of all names matching your criteria. I tried it with one of my family members and was able to find the record. |

Help! I can't find it either. I can't even find where it says "new data". I subscribe to Ancestry, so am not using the pay per view. Does this make a difference? (Can't see why it should). Can anyone point me in the right direction before I shred the curtains :-) Tina |

there seems to be a debate about if this is free or not. I just tried and it says £6 for viewing 20 premium images or take out a subscription. Gloria |

Yes, the Index text transcription for the most part has the same info as LDS but not all. If you use advanced viewer and select the magnifier glass icon you'll get a clearer reading. |

The index is the same as LDS as far as I can see, so if you know of transcription errors, use them! |
