Hi I would like to trace the following for the 1871 Census: Thomas Makin (born Bury, Lancs) aged 21/22 (born 1869/1870) I think he would have been married and also had a son Elliott (aged 1) at the time of the census. Elliott was also born in Bury. If someone can be so kind I'd much appreciate the time and any details found. Many Thanks Maurice

This is probably their marriage in 1874, which in theory suggests that Thomas might not be Elliott's father for for appearances sake Elliott took on his surname (Charity had an illegitimate son?) Surname First name(s) District Vol Page ------------------------------------------------- Marriages Dec 1874 --------------------------------------------- Makin Thomas Easington 10a 751 Ovington Charity Easington 10a 751 Plumpton Margaret Ann Easington 10a 751

Maybe I'm blind but I couldn't find them on 1871, not even Charity Ovington. Found family on 1891, with Charity widowed, but no Elliott with them. John, Thomas, Fannie, Samuel, William, James, Charity and David are with her. She remarried in 1891: Surname First name(s) District Vol Page ------------------------------------ Marriages Dec 1891 -------------------------------- Copeland Agnes Newcastle T 10b 268 DODDS Andrew Young Newcastle T 10b 268 Makin Charity Newcastle T. 10b 268 Wood Andrew Newcastle T 10b 268

Hi There Thanks for the help. I have the info you posted - however I have a bit more. That is the 1881 Census. In that both Thomas (father) and son Elliott are down as born Burry, Durham. Now, I went off on a wild goose chase trying to trace this mythical Burry in Durham (couldn't!). Anyway, I think either the census person or whoever transcribed it has made a mistake. As Elliott (in the 1901 census) has his birthplace as Bury, Lancashire. So, ideally I need a copy of the 1881 census document to check that one. Also, as both are from Bury I'd assume that it's not Charity who had the illegitiamte son. My theory is that Thomas had Elliott to someone else (a first wife?) in Bury prior to moving to Durham and marrying Charity. That's why I think the 1871 census may shed some light on this. Thanks again Maurice

Ah right Maurice..... One thing about the 1881. Looked at it, it says 'Durham' very cleary, but maybe the person who took it down was a bit hasty and didn't listen very well.

What is Elliott down as on 1901?

Maurice

Maurice Report 21 Nov 2004 19:57

In 1901, Elliott Makin is lving with Eleanor. They have children John (7) and Louise C. (1). They were in Byker, Northumberland by then though.

Hi Glynis Thanks for that - not the THomas I am looking for but no doubt relations of some kind. Cheers Maurice

Could anyone e-mail me the actual census documents? I would love the 1881 document (I have the transcript) and the 1871/1891 ones if possible. Excuse me if this is not allowed as I'm quite new to this site and the legality of it! Cheers Maurice

Perhaps they had moved to Durham by 1871 census. Durham isn't up on Ancestry yet. Is on the 'coming soon' bit though. I would email it to you, but I'm having annoying problems with viruses etc on my computer and I don't want to send anyone anything accidentally.

Hi Chloe I guess they could have moved by then. I think Elliot was born 1869 (or certainly 1870) so there's every possibility the family could have moved by 1871. Do any other sites have Durham up yet? I'm a bit of a novice - so I'm not sure what is available or what is happening with the 1871 census and anything prior. Thanks Maurice

Don't think there are. Ancestry will no doubt be updated in the next couple of weeks, if you can hang on! I think it's only Durham that's got to be done.

Ah but I've got the Family Tree bug! :-) Seriously, I've been researching on and off for several years but only recently have stareted properly again (and the whole internet genealogy scene/information has changed for the better!). So, I guess I can wait a couple of weeks! :-)

I know what you mean, Maurice. It's frustrating when you have to wait and you've got the bug!!!
