Hi Pam If you could find the birth certificates for her children that will probably show her maiden name. Also her marriage certificate to William would show this. You could assume (but it might not be) that Luke's middle Walker is her maiden name. Trish |

It MAY have been Walker ? but the only way you can find out is to look for a marriage on FreeBMD and/or Ancestry. If you get no joy from them, then you need the cert5ificate I'm afraid. Elaine :-) |

Hi again I noticed on 1881 Census that Martha was the Head of the Household. This may mean that William died before this and maybe his death certificate would show Martha's maiden name. I found this death record which may be his. Name: WOODHOUSE, William Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 38 Quarter: March Year: 1872 District: Chesterfield County: Derbyshire Volume: 7b Trish |

The death certs don't give you spouses details ...ONLY the name of the person who registers the death. IF this is the Spouse, you get the name at time of death. Unfortunately, the death certs don't go into family details. Elaine :-) |

Thanks for the Scottish info ... I did know this but since we are referring to Derbyshire I didn't think it appropriate to mention. Elaine :-) |

Luke seems to have different ages on different census. 1881 Martha is a Charwoman and is widowed she is age 48 years. Luke is her son aged 17 years and is a Farm Labourer, Leonard is her son aged 14 years, Mary is her daughter aged 10 years. 1891 address: 40 Victoria St, Brampton St Thomas, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Luke is a Labourer aged 26 years - wife Kate 25 years. Children Amy 3 years and Sarah Jane 1 year 1901 address: 48 Victoria St, Brampton St Thomas, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Luke is a Coal Carter aged 41 years - wife Kate 35 years, Amy 13 years, Jane 11 years, Kate 9 years, Edith 6 years, Luke 4 years, Harriet 2 years, Samuel 3 months. 1881 census means Luke was born approx 1864 1891 census means Luke was born approx 1865 1901 census means Luke was born approx 1860 Trish |

Hi Pam A good way to look now would be to check the 1861 census - you can ask someone on records board if they can do this for you. I will add addresses where they lived in with my previous messages. Trish |
