Hiya everyone, My mother has asked me to find info on her grand-father but she hasn't given me mush to go on. Here is all I know: Name: JOHN BURTON Born: Burton (in Derbyshire - where his father was born) or Manchester (Where his son was born) Was classed as an "older father" when his son was born in 1928 so I'm assuming he will appear in any census after 1871. Any info greatly appreciated. Vikki x ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I have just phoned my mum and she has a lot more info that she originally made out. JOHN BURTON was married to SARAH JOHNSON both probably from MANCHESTER. He had 1 sister (CISSY) and she had 3 sisters (CISSY, FRANCIS, and BEATRICE). JOHN & SARAH had 3 kids in MANCHESTER (ERNEST, DORIS & ARTHUR) when they live at BURNAGE LANE but I don't know if any of this was pre-1901. JOHN had a lot of jobs in MANCHESTER including HAULAGE CONTRACTOR, GREENGROCER & CARRIER. He also did voluntary work for the MANCHESTER CHILDRENS HOSPITAL and served in WW1. Any info on the above family much appreciated.

Hi Vikki This is not alot to go on, there will be loads of John Burtons. Do you have any other details, approx age, wifes name, parents names or anything like that? If not, you will probably have to buy his son's birth certificate to get more information. Sam

If you can find his son's birth cert, it will have his occupation on it, which might make it easier to find him on 1901 census, and then find his place/date of birth. nell

Just to give you some idea of what you are up against, there are 100 John Burtons in Derbyshire on 1901 census. That is before you even look at the Lancashire one! Also, Burton on Trent is in Staffordshire as far as I am aware. Sam

There are literally thousands of John Burtons. Have you no other info at all?

Hiya, I knew it was a long shot, especially as 'John' is such a common name. I will ask my mother if she has any other info and will try again. Thanks for your help. Vikki x

Burton on Trent is definately in Staffordshire. I get very annoyed when it is listed as Derbyshire. Yes, we are on the border. yes, we have a DE postcode. BUT we are in Staffordshire and proud of it. Margaret

Can't find their marriage on FreeBMD. If he served in WW1 do you have any idea whether he was fighting abroad? He would be on the Medal Roll online, but you would need more info to find him, such as his regiment. There are 1,000s of John Burtons. What a shame you have no idea of his date of birth - can your mother remember whether he died before or after she was born? If you could narrow it down, you could find his death cert which would give his age at death and make finding his birth easier. nell

Victoria If this is the marriage: England and Wales, Civil Registration Index: 1837-1983 Name Year Quarter District County Volume Page AYRTON, Stephen 1908 March Chorlton Lancashire 8c 1269 BURTON, John 1908 March Chorlton Lancashire 8c 1269 JOHNSON, Sarah 1908 March Chorlton Lancashire 8c 1269 SMITH, Lucy 1908 March Chorlton Lancashire 8c 1269 You can order the cert (but ask GRO to check the bride is Sarah Johnson). This cert will give both John and Sarah's fathers and their occupations, which should make it easier to find them on 1901 census. It may also give the ages of the bride and groom which will help to trace their births. Details on how to order certificates online here: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp#0 nell
