Hi Rosi Well it's worth a go although I will have to wait till the end of the month to buy more units-have to limit myself as it all gets a bit addictive! Still I will try that idea. Many thanks Michele

Similarly I spent ages and a small fortune searching for a kingpin one of mine that was very elusive. I eventually found him by looking at the unnamed 'male' entries that occur, if any, at the end of each surname in the registers. And there he was - at the right time and in the right place! I sent for the Certificate - and the parents were correct. I did check the 'deaths' as well, just in case he hadn't survived, but found nothing. I have no idea why he wasn't named when he was registered- maybe he wasn't expected to live - or maybe they couldn't decide and had huge arguments. The little chap was finally called Sainthill, passed down for several generations, but was known as Till for most of his life. Sorry- have gone on a bit haven't I ! Rosi

Hi Michele I am in the same position as you. My gt gt grandmother was born in 1849, but there is no birth certificate for her. (double checked, treble checked etc..) I asked at the FRC why this is and they advised me that there are quite a few people that have no birth certificates for some reason. (our ancestors must have had a reason I guess!) I'm afraid your only way to find out information for your ancestor if no birth cert is trawling through the parish records, which I am currently doing and damn frustrating it is too!!!!!!!!! Sarah

Hi Michele The death record on 1837online gives the date of birth as 05/04/1897. Have you looked at ths year as well? Sam

Is it a bird? is it a plane? Report 8 Jan 2005 20:51

The only reason I mentioned that was one of my lines had a son who was killed in the war. According to the 1901 census he was born in a particular village, but according to his death info on the Soldiers of the Great War CD he put a different village down as his birthplace. It was just a thought in case the family moved somewhere else when he was born (father's job or something) and then they moved back to the area once his sister was born. When it came to filling in the census the enumerator may have copied down the other's birth place by accident.

Sarah Thanks for the thought but have found his death in 1971 or at least I think its him, have sent for the certificate which may help to confirm. Have checked on cwgc site and he is not there, think the family were quite lucky as they had 6 sons who would have been of age to fight in WW1 and they all survived. Michele

Yes it is terribly frustrating when you can't find one of them! I honestly don't know what to suggest. Unless... was he killed in WWI?

:( the bad news is none of the Sussex registry offices seem to have indexes online. If you ever need an alternative to FreeBMD and 1837online in the future check out http://www.ukbm(d.c)o.uk (remove brackets). Sorry :(

Sarah Many thanks. The name is Leonard Thomas Ansell born approx 1898 in either Thakeham or East Preston both I am pretty sure in West Sussex. I have worked out the date from his age on 1901 census, his younger sister was definately born June 1899. Many thanks for your offer of help. Michele

Some area have their own online and free to search birth, marriage and death indexes. If you gave me a rough idea of area I would be able to say whether or not there is an alternative website to try and give you the URL if there was one.

I know where his older brother (born approx 4 years earlier) and younger sister (born approx 1 year later) where born so I guess it would be one of those two places. Michele
