My sister in law found her nans marriage on 1837 so went to local office to order cert and after 3 weeks they now said no marrige took place between these people for thes dates or two months either side.if a couple got divorced surely there would still be a record of a marriage wouldnt there? Karin and Kirsty

Are you sure that your sister in law cross checked both names on 1837 to make sure that the couple did marry each other (they have to have the same ref no's) Might be best to have another look, perhaps she wrote down the wrong quarter or something Margaret

Are you sure it was the right office - they did change occasionally. Could you put some names up so we can check? nell

Isn't Ashbourne in Derbyshire? (These northerners, only know matchstick men) Point being dont give up, question and re-check. P

Hi Peter It is, which just goes to show not all Derbyshire certs come from Derby Register Office! Lou

Margaret

Margaret Report 28 Jan 2005 22:27

Peter Yes, Ashbourne is in Derbyshire, but Lou said Derby. Which is a city in its own right Margaret

Thank you Margaret And Peter, I don't think there's any need to be quite so patronising. If you had read my posting correctly I said DERBY, not Derbyshire Lou

I am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't it possible to have the same reference for two couples marrying at the same place on the same day? Could you possibly have the wrong bride and groom together? Chrissie

Karin I've just checked on 1837online. The persons are as you say and they married in Weymouth 1951 Jun vol 8c p.1321. This should be the correct office: South & West Dorset The Guildhall, St Edmund Street, Weymouth, DT4 8AS. Tel: 01305 760899. They won't use the GRO index ref, so perhaps with these details you could apply to the GRO instead, here: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp#0 nell

Chrissie You are both right and wrong. Because of the date, the spouses surname is indexed with the other name. So, yes there are 2 couples on the page, but it this case they did marry each other. Margaret
