I read somewhere that the number of "deaf and dumb" people in some census returns was astronomical. Until it was pointed out that they were mostly children under 1y of age who had no hope of being able to confirm their own names! |

They can only do names at mo but said they are working on addresses. Thats good then my GGFx2 will be able to be born Shadwell rather than Thadwete. |

Hi guys PLEASE report transcriptions errors to Ancestry as if we all keep doing it more and more of it will become accurate for others. PS, I found Depford in Kenya the other day |

Amos transcribed as Asme Harwich as Aiaraich ...... (almost phonetic ..) Favourite was a 'Son - James M, age 16' - spent hours looking for a marriage, finally looked at the image, clearly JANE ! Excusable I guess ... |

My personal favourite on Ancestry was the one who's named was given as Idiot brought in by spouse. He was in the workhouse, poor chap! Lou |

I understand that the people who transcribed for ancestry knew what was to happen in the future. On 1901 site my ggrandfather is a Visitor at his soon to be mother in laws house. However, the transcriber for ancestry put him down as Son in Law. Perhaps they knew my ggrandparents would marry later in the year! I wouldn't mind if the image was hard to read but it's as clear as anything. |

I have found mistranscriptions on quite a few of my ancestors and I have only been a subscriber for a few days ! One of my ancestors surname Backhouse is transcribed as Backhaus and his stepchildren surname Rose as Ross and the image is relatively clear. E's obviously don't exist. Janet |

"son in law" probably meant "stepson". You will often find "in law" used for "step" and vice versa. |

Following on Husband in law, in searching for my Gf as a boy of 8/9 I came across a boy of 10 referred to as Son in law. Census 1861/1871. Can any one explain please? Rupert. |

Ancestry does not believe in transcription. Instead, it translates. Instead of Prussia you get (I think) Preben with a fancy B. It's the Nanny knows best theory, which is fine when it works, but says more about Ancestry than the records. |
