McAnne's Gahan-Crazy Report 12 Feb 2005 00:04

Just to warn you over the not so secure Paypal and Ebay sites. I have been scammed by an unauthorised person somewhere in the US for £842 (no its not a mistake thats Pounds too not dollars!!) which has been debited in 4 seperate transactions on my Switch Card which was registered with Ebay and Paypal on their 'secure servers', if it wasnt so serious it would be laughable. Apparently someone has hacked into my emails, ebay & paypal accounts and made 4 purchases for online games totalling £842. Thankfully my bank are investigating this and have cancelled my card, and they have cancelled the transactions (this can take 3-5 days) the only thing is until the investigation is complete I have no access to my money as my bank account funds were authorised for the £842 and now I cannot get into my bank account until I get a new card and account detail!! Paypal are being a bit helpful, they are investigating the situation but Ebay have said it is not their problem as you are meant to change your password every 30 days!! So much for secure servers etc etc This is genuine and I just wanted to prewarn anyone who is using Pay Pal or Ebay it really is not as secure as they make us believe!

Anne That's awful! It makes you wonder how secure all these sites are that we have to give our card details to for credits etc. Lou

True Lou, But I think this is where they have actually registered for a 'paypal' account, which holds all your info......... I've never done so thankfully, as I tend to be a bit wary of things like that, but my fella also got caught like this too.

I cancelled my paypal account because the site kept crashing and timing out. I didn't like the idea of my details being left in limbo, not sure if I was signed in or out or if I'd edited my information successfully or not.

Heather Report 12 Feb 2005 13:34

God that is scarey. Strangely enough I had a nonsense mail this morning which I deleted. Asking me once again to enter my Pay Pal details on a page as ebay were checking on the details at random. Yeah, sure! How did you find out about the transactions?

McAnne's Gahan-Crazy

McAnne's Gahan-Crazy Report 12 Feb 2005 13:44

Heather, Friend had registered a Switch card, which is a debit card to a bank account, so it would have showed straight away on any cash withdrawal or statement printout. I'd certainly know pretty quick if that sort of money disappeared from my bank account - the cash machine would refuse to talk to me ............. At least they have it in hand now, but it's no consolation for their loss. Anne

Heather Report 12 Feb 2005 14:14

I use a credit card, so I wouldnt know until a statement came - or would paypal tell you. Yes, that always confirm a transaction, dont they. There is a thread about this on the tips board. It seems likely your friend got one of those scam mails which look real saying their account has been compromised, please click here to enter your details. I have had dozens of them. Must admit the very first one I got I actually went to the link and thank gawd just realised they wouldnt ask you that over the net. So deleted.

Heather, I have copied the replies on tips in an email to my friend, just in case, even if it is closing the stable door so to speak. Anne

Susan Report 12 Feb 2005 15:28

I have a card with a very low limit (GBP100) registered to Paypal. The bank are under instruction to NOT pay out any more than that limit unless I authorise by phone first (which would mean going through all my security details). I only did this because I didn't like the idea of my details being on the loose when these payment methods first started up. Have had no problems with Paypal and will be keeping my account! I'm sorry your friend got caught by one of the rogue scam emails - I've received loads of these and deleted them. I recently received a similar kind of scam email purporting to be from HSBC but asking for every item of my account information including pin code!!!! A very obvious scam ... S:>

Susan

Susan Report 12 Feb 2005 16:39

Susan You just tell your credit card company the limit you want on the card!!!! I'm sure Paypal does set a limit as well, but they want you to spend loads so it's not a case of setting a limit on Paypal but setting a limit on your credit card!!! The card I have registered with Paypal I use for Paypal only ... and I certainly would not spend more than £100 on anything from eBay! S:>

Thanks for the warning. I haven't used my Pay Pal account in over a year and in light of the recent scams, I also decided to close my account.
