I'm looking for Edith A Kewley on the 1881 census. She was born in 1878 in Salford, Lancs. On the 1891 she is living with her mother, Annie Kewley and her cousin, Edward Moran. I am struggling to find her and/or her mother on either the 1881 or 1901. Thanks. Louise |

Thank you everyone. I really need your help as I still can't find them. They were living at 2 Bank St, North West Manchester in 1891 and Edward Moran, the cousin they were living with was aged 32 and a beerhouse keeper. Edith married Michael Logue in 1910 and (as far as I know) that was her first wedding. The wedding was registered in Chorlton. |

There is no Edith A Kewley born 1878, or any time that's on FreeBMD, but there is this one (have checked FamilyRelatives, this is the only one born 1878) Surname: Kewley Forename: Edith District: Salford. Vol/Page: 8d 172 Qtr: Sep Year: 1878 This would mean she'd be about 2 on the 1881.... |

Hi everyone and thanks again! The 1891 census has Annie Kewley aged 40 and born in Manchester. There is a possible for Annie on the 1881 in a lunatic asylum in Preston! How likely is that that she would have a child in Salford in 1878, be in an asylum in Preston in 1881 and then back with her child in Manchester in 1891? I'm getting even more confused. Louise PS. I have to go out for a few hours, so please don't think I'm ignoring you. I'll check in again later. |

Hi Geoff, I guess this might be her, especially if her mother was locked up! Maybe she was known by her second name as a child. Definitely worth considering. Cheers. Louise |

Thanks again to everyone that helped earlier. After a few restorative glasses of wine, I have made progress on this one and am now pretty certain that my ancestor is not the lunatic - phew! It seems that Annie Kewley was born Annie Littlewood. She married Samuel Kewley in 1869 and on the 1871 census they are living together with his mother and his brother. They appear to have 4 children, Lambert, Samuel, William and Edith during the 1870s. Then it all goes squiffy! In 1881 Samuel and the 3 boys are living in Chorlton upon Medlock. Annie is in Hulme with her mother and siblings BUT there is no sign of Edith unless she is the Ann Kewely 'nurse child' that Geoff found earlier. (Annie is rather marvellously mistranscribed as 'Annie Kecoby' in 1881 which is why we couldn't find her earlier.) Samuel and the boys stayed in Chorlton and can be found together on the 1891 and 1901 censuses. Annie and Edith are reunited and living with relatives in 1891 and 1901. I assume that the marriage broke up and dad kept his sons and mother got the daughter, but why are Annie and Edith not together in 1881? Sorry this is a bit long but thought some of you might want the update and I'd love to hear if any of you have views on this. Also does anyone know what 'nurse child' means? Is this a term anyone has come across? Cheers, Louise |

Hi Louise.Nurse child is foster child. My grandmother was one and because of that I dont know where to look for her parents. Her mother claimed to be married on grans birth cert as she uses formerly known as but cant find a marriage or both parents together in any census. She was still with the same family 10 years later and probably married from there. |

Hi Louise, Nurse Child means Foster Child (one of my rellies fostered a child who was described as a Nurse Child) Found this info: By the end of the nineteenth century, there was a move away from keeping children in the workhouse. It was not seen as a suitable environment in which to raise a child. Efforts were made to foster them with families, known as boarding out. This could be a lucrative source of income to families who took in workhouse children. Tilda:-) |
