Just got the above book which lists all the parishes in Herts and gives details of what records are available for each parish and where they are stored. I'm not familiar with these index books but happy to give the info provided. I guess its useful if you are planning avisit to see the records or need to contact holders and need to know where they are. Please leave message on this thread, bear with me, I will respond to all requests. Karen PS: if anyone knows of any other benefit of the index let me know!

Hi Carrie - unfortunately the index doesn't give the names of people, just what records are available and where they are stored. Berdon does not appear in the book anywhere - sorry. Karen

One thing for enquirers to bear in mind is that you must specify the period in which you are interested. Anyone who asked me about Croydon, Surrey church records circa 1880 would get very short shrift because I would spend days typing it out. A friend has calculated that there have been over 100 places of worship in Croydon up to the present day! There may be a single church in a village, but town parishes in the 1800s are forever subdividing as the populations grew. Even the villages often have a methodist chapel and the towns will have numerous chapels of every persuasion.

Barabara- thanks for posting that note, good for me too as I hadn't realised some parishes were so big, hadn't thought to ask for the years.
