I phoned my local register office today to see if I could check there birth records as I can't find my Percy carlton anywhere, the lady on the phone wasn't very helpful she just said check LDS website. I asked if that was complete and she said yes. So it looks like my Percy wasn't ever registered in 1881-83 (I thought they had to be by that date). I can't find him anywhere but he is on the census for 1891 + 1901 so I know he was living. I can't find his death either. Is this correct? Thanks Zoe x

LDS website is complete for 1881 census but not for BMD. I don't think the lady you spoke to knew what she was talking about! Have you checked 1837online? If not, what area was he born in, i have a few credits I'll have a look for you. Sam

Zoe It's possible he's registered but not in the district you expected to find him, or he could have been registered as Carlton, male if they hadn't decided on a name for him. When and where do you think he was born? nell

Ah I see what you all mean, what does phonetic mean or is that a dumb question. Any way I have him been born in Sheffield, Crookes which is the Ecclesal Bierlow district around 1881-1883. His father was Christopher. Many many thanks Zoe :)

Thanks Linda, I have seen that option but wasn't sure which one to choose. I will try that now and let you know. Thanks again Zoe :)

Hi Jess, Thanks for that info I will bear the one in west riding in mind. Possible he was called Percy Selby Carlton, its just that on all the census he is Percy Harold Carlton. Maybe he changed his name. Anyway thanks so much for trying. Zoe x

Zoe Percy Selby Carlton got married in Wakefield in 1908 so is unlikely to be your chap unless he was a bigamist name changer! Lou

Hi Tracey, I think you may have found him because on the 1901 census it says he is 20 so that would make him 0 in 1881. I am really not sure now. I do know that Christopher was married before to someone called Mary Hannah Cousins, but she died in 1881. Thanks for looking. Zoe :)

Hi Linda, Tracey found someone called Percy harold Carlton born in dec 1879, I am not sure if this could be him as he was born in Ecclesall Bierlow. The only thing is that I think he would be on the census for 1881 unless he was sleeping at friends that night, lol. I have him on the 1891 census as being 8 years old but on the 1891 census as being 20. I have phoned the crookes cemetery today and they have a death for him in 1967. Let me know what you think. Thanks again Zoe :)

> For instance my surname is Baynham, but can sound like > banham, baynam etc A phonetic search will match actual phonetic renderings of a name... that is it would probably match something like 'bayenham' or maybe 'baynum' but not 'banham' or 'Baynam'. You need a 'Soundex', or similar, search algorithm to get matches on spellings derived from alternative pronuciations. Cheers, Bill Sydney, Australia

Hi Linda, Thanks for all your help you have found the right one, I have phoned my nan and she says he did die in 1967. I will send for a death cert from the info you gave me. Thanks again sorry if I didn't reply earlier its just that I have been away for a few days. I am back at it now though. Zoe :)
