I am going crazy with this and any help would be appreciated. Thanks to those who have already assisted with this. The story so far: Alfred Benjamin RUSSELL was born around 1859 in Camberwell, Surrey/London. In 1882 he married in St Olave, Surrey/ London. With no consideration for later generations trying to find him, he died in 1887 in London before the next census! I have tracked down his wife Amelia MARDORF ( a widow aged 26) but can find no trace of her on the 1871 census in either the name of MARDORF or her maiden name of BOOTLE or on the 1891 census. Her father's name was given as Joseph BOOTLE on her marriage certificate, a wheelwright. In 1881 she was a widow living with relatives of her first husband in New Kent Road. Her second husband Alfred died at this address also in 1887. I am trying to trace any possible children from her marriage to Alfred RUSSELL. Thanks in advance Regards Evie |

You could try finding the wifes pre-marriage on the 1881 census and see which one was living nearest your inconsiderate chap. If by any chance either is with their family you could look for THAT family on the 1891 and see if she or any possible children are living with them. Relatives did tend to do this, I have several lots living just a street or so away, often looking after nieces/nephews or grandchildren. You might strike lucky! nell |

Evie - is there also a second husband listed on FreeBMD who married the 'other' wife? If so, perhaps you can track him down and find out what his wife's name was, then you know it was the other one who married your relative. Kate. |

Or alternatively, perhaps he left a will and would be listed on the National Probate Calendar. If you can get a look at that and if he is on there it will tell almost certainly tell you his widow's name. Kate. |

I've looked at the name of the other chap and tried all permentations with both the ladies on the 1891, but nothing I'm afraid. It may well be worth getting both certificates and keep your fingers crossed. Sorry. OR..Do you know any of their childrens' details. You could order the birth certificate. Sorry have just re-read your original note. I'll have a look for children. |

This may be worth keeping for future reference. I know it's a long shot, but the middle name is the same as your Alfred, it's the right district in London and the right year. Russell, Henry Alfred Record Type: Births Quarter: March Year: 1883 District: St Olave Southwark County: London Surrey Volume: 1d Page: 282 Good luck. |

Thanks Nell, Kate and Suzy for taking the time to look. I couldn't get back on pc last night.......kids!! At least it appears I have not missed anything glaringly obvious in trying to track this man down! It seems my only recourse is to order yet another certificate! Shouldn't they offer a discount to people ordering lots? lol Thanks again Regards Evie |

PS Amelia MARDORF seems the most likely wife of Alfred RUSSELL as she lived nearby at the time. She was already a widow at 24. How unlucky is that if she was Alfred's wife and then was widowed again within a few short years? Regards Evie |

Hi Sheila Thanks for looking. I appreciate it. Amelia MARDORF does have the same ref number but can find no trace of her on 1891 census under either name of MARDORF or RUSSELL. This is my dilemna! Have also looked at the possibility of her having remarried yet again before 1891 but no luck there either! I am looking for any possible children from the marriage but cannot find them without finding the right wife! Thanks again. Regards Evie |
