i had found the family on the 1841/1861 discs a couple of weeks a go and the 1851 at the library, so i think Brenda has all this info already, i think Brenda is looking for the marriage of James Harvey and Elizabeth Gelsthorpe, there is a igi for Elizabeth born Hasland, 1817, James as i remember from the 1851 was born Coventry, him being a railway labourer he must have moved a lot with his job so could have married anywhere between Hasland and Coventry i suppose, i had lost my internet for a while so may have not kept Brenda fully informed on what i found

Brenda A million apologies....I've found them! Where it looks like Hasland has finished, the enumerator had obviously run out of sheets and there are several pages with people listed that have just been written onto a normal sheet of paper. Yours are on there and I missed them the first time. They're slotted in almost where the next village starts! SO....Hasland Village RG9/2531-25 Pg 48 Elizabeth Harvey HEAD 43 Marr Labourer's Wife John Harvey SON Un 19 Coal Miner Thomas Harvey SON Un 16 Coal Miner Sarah Ann Harvey DAUG 14 Scholar George Harvey SON 11 ''''''' Edwin Harvey SON 8 ''''''' All born Hasland Lou

Elaine With pleasure, I'm going to have a 2nd look in the morning as well when I'm a bit 'fresher'. It's got me baffled - as well as annoyed cos I hate to be defeated - they HAVE to be there! I couldn't even SEE Calow Lane in Hasland so it either wasn't built or there's a bit missing that I've not found yet! Lou

Lou & Brenda, Lou, THANK YOU for doing the search instead of me, I am truely grateful, as you know ! Brenda, I am totally gobsmacked ... I have past that statue a thousand times and never given it a second thought, but next time I go to that area, I'll stop the car and get out ! and have a real good look at it ! It will mean something now ! Have you seen it ... do you need any further info about it ? Brenda, I'm going to try and locate your family on the 1841 for you again and try and work out what the address was etc, see if it throws any light on the situation. Lou, I don't doubt your search for one single second, but knowing that you had been trawling most of the morning etc, if I get chance over the weekend, would you mind if I took another look. I'm at the Dentist at some point tomorrow, so depending what happens with that, I'll see how much time I can find to relax with Derbyshire disc's ! I just love them so much !!! Elaine :-)

Hello Lou and Elaine, Elizabeth has as far as we know always lived in Hasland,we obtained Johns year of birth from census records, but could not find any records of his date of birth. We did obtain the birth certificate of his younger brother William Edwin who was born on 5th September 1852 Hasland Mother Elizabeth Harvey(Gelsthorpe) Father James Harvey. William went to work down the coal pit at the age of 10,later was co founder of the Derbyshire Miners Association and his statue stands outside the hq in Chesterfield. He then became labour MP for the North East of Derbyshire and he died whilst still in office in 1914, we have his orbituary from The Times but no mention of his parents. Not bad for such a hard start in life. We did wonder if his orb. appeared in the local Chesterfield newspapers which might throw some light on his parents. The Harveys were definately in Hasland and all connected to coalmining in one way or another. James was a railroad Labourer but seems to have done a disappearing act.We did find a James Harvey marriage to Elizabeth Oaken c.1839 which is a different maiden name to Gelsthorpe, in Burton on Trent. It is possible perhaps she had previously married or we could be going up a totally wrong path.

I confess to being absolutely stumped I have checked Hasland TWICE plus Calow, Taplow, Newbold St John and Whittington and there are no Harvey's at all Hate to be defeated especially cos it's highly likely they are somewhere in the vicinity Will take another look later Lou

There are only 1841 & 1861 Derbyshire census's available on disc at mo. 1851 is due out August. I will check Hasland for you tomorrow on 1861. In meantime, can you just confirm that they were in Hasland in 1841 ? Is it John's birth cert you have for 1842 ? if so, what addy is on that ? (another address to search for) Elaine :-)

Thank you Elaine and Janet, I have found Elizabeth and family on most census's,1871 onwards I have Elizabeth listed as 'married but separated from husband'whatever that means! and then 'Widow',I believe the 1841 census states he was born in another county and married to Elizabeth and have only just found out her maiden name via one of their childrens birth certificates.I haven't been able to look at the 1851 census, but James doesn't appear on any census's after that,so I have now come up against a brick wall as regards going back further on the Harvey line.Regards,Brenda

I am struggling to find the marriage of Elizabeth Gelsthorpe born c.1817 in Hasland,Derbyshire to James Harvey who was not born in that county. I think they married around 1839/1841 as their son John was born 1842. Any help greatly appreciated, especially if I can find where James came from. Brenda
