Please please can anyone help here I am looking for a Philip Gowing. I have a marriage certificate of Louisa Gowing who married William Spilling 21 June 1840 at the parish church in the parish of Thorpe Episcope in Norfolk. They were said to be living in Thorpe Hamlet at the time of marriage Williams father was Abraham Spilling a Cordwainer (we know all about him) Louisas father is Philip Gowing also down as a Cordwainer. Witnesses Samuel Dady (no idea who he is) and Abraham Spilling I have found Louisa and William on 1861 and 1871 in Norfolk – on 1881 she is widowed and living at 10 Spring St, Newchurch, Lancashire but back in Norfolk in 1891. Of Philip Gowing I have never found any sign, I had assumed he was probably dead but recently on FreeBMD a death record for a Philip Gowing showed up for 1872 Norwich age of Philip was given as 68. This age is about 4 years younger than I would expect my Philip to be but as I have never found a record of another I held out hope and sent for the cert. The cert says he died in The Hospital St Stephen January 4th 1872 and the death was registered in the sub district of Mancroft Norwich. Unfortunately it gives no indication of any relatives as the coroner was the informant. There was an nquest held on Jan 4th 1872 and the cause of death was Injuries to leg caused by accidentally being knocked down by pony after which he lived 16 days. His occupation on the death cert is Ag Lab. Because his death happened less than 10 months after the 1871 census he has to be on that census somewhere but I simply cannot find him. Of course this may not be my Philip but I would still like to find him to be absolutely sure. Can anyone please help or advice here – maybe if you have searchable census for areas other than Norfolk you could try a search. Anything at all would be appreciated as its driving me dotty Teresa

Teresa Calm down! As he was around Norfolk and died there I think it most probable he is in the county somewhere, mistranscribed. as you haven't found him under Gowing have you tried Gow Gower Gowning Going or Cowing - even Cowen Dowing etc. nell

Believe me I have tried every thing even searching thru 400 odd just philips no surname. Gowen is the way it is usually mistranscribed but although I found a philip on one census he was about 30 years to young Teresa

Do you know where Louisa was born? nell

Yes most census say she was born in Catton abt 1825/6 - I have checked there and a few nearby parishes - however I was unable to find her birth record when i had my rare trip to the records office. At some point and I cannot remeber where I found mention of a Benjamin Gowing born the year after Louisa - his birth place was given as St Pauls Norwich which is close to Catton and his father was down as Philip but I have never been able to find him either If I am correct I believe my Philip is the one mentioned on family search who was born abt 1799 Norwich and married Hannah Wiseman St Augustine Noriwich in 1817 Teresa

Teresa, The recorded death age is only as reliable as thought by the informant to be true< Kay,

Teresa I have checked on 1837 for a death 1840 to 1841 just in case he died between the marriage and the next census. No go I'm afraid. There are two William's in Norwich, and an Adam also in Norwich, but sorry no Phillip. Victor

Louisa From BVRI2. No Philip Gowing but I found these three. The last 'may' be yours. There were quite a lot of Gowings in Norfolk, but no Philips. Doesn't help finding him in the census I know, but it might be useful.
