Kate must just add a further find.George married for the second time in1864 to Frances Barker of Sheffied and went to live at Staveley Derbys, so this would make the possibility of Mary Eliza being left with Luke more likely, although she was given grandaughter status she would be his neice and aunt to Moses. Regards Roy.

Kate your an angel If I may say so. Your's is the first positive lead I have had after months of searching. Luke Birkin had a brother George b.c1833 who married Emma Mountfod at Newark Registry office 12 March 1855 and resided at Carter Lane Newark, they had a daughter Mary Eliza b. c1862. This could be the Eliza registered Newark 7b 289 you gave me yesterday who I said I had discarded as she was from the wrong area and guess what? looking through my records I find Mary Eliza was Baptised at Greasley 24th November 1862. I'm pretty new to gealogy and can't see wood for trees, its down to your much appreciated help that the jigsaw is coming together, Thankyou! It does seem that Eliza & Moses are cousins so that leaves me now with the mystery of William and Sarah, but I am really happy to have an idea who Little Eliza's parents are. I will now try and locate her after 1871. Regards Roy.

Hello Roy. When I'd finished looking at Eastwood I guessed that Newthorpe might come under Greasley but I didn't have time to look it up then. I've had a look now and didn't find anything useful in burials 1868 - 1871 or marriages 1858 - 1868, but there was one more possible Eliza in the baptisms: 24 Nov 1862 Mary Eliza, daughter of George and Emma Birkin, abode Newthorpe, father's occupation Coal Miner. Kate.

Thank you Julie for your IGI lists, but have to tell you I have looked at them many times before. Hello again Kate I was able to browse all marriages on 1837onLine between 1860 & 1870. Found one for Sarah Levers & one for Sarah Ann Leevers, neither page had a William Birkin. The births for Eliza / Elizabeth you state in your last post, I am familiar with. The Eliza b. Newark I was not able to trace but have discounted as being from the wrong area. Wilizebeth is Elizebeth the daughter of Jonathan & Frances, Luke Birkin's brother. She was in service for Elizabeth Nuttall at Matlock in 1881 and went on to marry Harry Chambers. Elizabeth Ann would be the same age as the young Eliza Birkin in the 1871 census. I am unable to find said Elizabeth Ann in 1971 but found her in service for Emma Wharton at Derby Road Nottingham in 1881. Needless to say I can no longer find young Eliza, after 1881 I am unable to trace either, this leads me to believe they may be the same person. I think my next step will have to be to obtain birth certificate for Elizabeth Ann hopfully to determine her parents and go from there. I appreciate you doing the parish records lookups on my behalf but believe Newthorpe is under Greasley. Thankyou again for all your efforts Regards Roy.

Hi again Roy. It just so happened that I was in the Nottinghamshire Archives this morning so I had a look at the Eastwood parish registers, but sorry to say I didn't find much of any use. Couldn't find a burial for Sarah between 1868 and 1871, nor marriage between William and Sarah between 1859 and 1869, the only Eliza or Elizabeth Birkin I could find in the baptisms 1861 onwards was Elizabeth, daughter of Jonathan and Fanny, baptised 8th Jan 1865 (presumably the sister of Eliza Ann 1858 in the IGI extracts above). I couldn't find any separate parish registers for Newthorpe, but perhaps it came under some other parish than Eastwood? I did have a quick look at the GRO indexes while I was there, and found the following birth entries: Sep 1861 BIRKIN Elizabeth Ann, Basford, 7b 80 Mar 1862 BIRKIN Wlizabeth, Nottingham, 7b 226 Dec 1862 BIRKIN Eliza Newark, 7b 289 (It really does say 'Wlizabeth' but is listed before 'Henry' so must have been a typing error, not a strange name. I don't know how you would order the cert for that one though!) The only marriage entry for a William Birkin in Dec 1859 was Nottingham 7b 455, so there is no way it could go with the Sarah Leivers entry for that quarter, which was Basford. Kate.

Dear Roy, FreeBMD is not complete yet, and the CRI index on Ancestry is just a copy of FreeBMD but 1837online is a complete copy of the GRO indexes so if you have looked on there, it looks as though the Sarah Leivers marriage you found wasn't the right one. I can't think of anything else right now. Kate.

Roy Report 10 May 2005 01:27

Hello Kate, I have checked FreeBMD, FamilySearch, 1937Online and CRI index on Ancestry without success. Would there likely to be additional entries in the GRO index that are not included in the aforementioned lists ? I was under the impression that FreeBMD & 1937Online were copies of the GRO index.Thankyou for taking the trouble to answer my request. Regards Roy.

Kate

Kate Report 9 May 2005 23:41

Dear Roy, Have you looked on the GRO indexes to see if there is a marriage entry for William Birkin in Dec 1859 to match the Sarah Leivers one which I presume you got from FreeBMD? That should answer one question, for the other you would need to look through the GRO indexes for a birth registration for Eliza Birkin about 1861-2 and get the certificate. Kate.

Thankyou for your interest Brenda,I am 99.9% sure I have the entire family. The only other child not mentioned by me was William b. c1839 who died as an infant. 1841 & 1851 censuses show no other children, no little Eliza in 1851.I always considered Eliza & Moses to be illegitimate children of the older Eliza untill I confirmed the birth of Moses and obtained certiicate giving his parents as William Birkin & Sarah Leivers. I have also considered little Eliza could be a Elizabeth Ann Birkin who was in service at Derby Rd. Nottingham in 1881 but can find no trace of her after that time. The older Eliza died in 1882 unmarried. I have also checked Family History site without success. I should also add SKP checked the Notts Marriage Index but could find no marriage for either Sarah Leivers or William Birkin around 1859.

Phoenix Report 9 May 2005 17:57

Roy It looks as if you currently have only half a family. Luke Birkin appears to have married before the start of civil registration and there may be a whole clutch of elder children. To test this, it would be helpful to have sight of the 1851 and more importantly the 1841 census. Little Eliza could have been an illegitimate child brought up by grandparents, a legitimate child, brought up by grandparents or a visitor. She might have been a child of an elder son who has died and when her mother remarries she takes on the step-father's surname.... She might have been given the surname by a sloppy enumerator. She might actually be just 10 and appear on the previous census with her parents. She might be Elizabeth, known as Eliza. The possibilities go on and on. As a matter of interest, have you looked at the family history online site? They have a burial index for Notts, with plenty of Birkin references.

Thank you nell found Daniel Henley married to Eliza in 1881 & 1901 But Eliza's age and birthplace do not match my Eliza I have failed to find any trace of her after 1871 either death or marriage.

Unknown

Unknown Report 9 May 2005 16:11

To find info about Eliza Birkin's birth and parents, you would need to look in the relevant parish baptism register. Her death would be registered under her married name. You would need to find her on a census to find out which husband she married (if you didn't want to order a cert on spec) and then look for deaths under that name for her, or a second marriage. nell
