I am struggling with one family in my tree: Father James Grimmett, b1811 in Charlbury, Oxfordshire Died sometime before 1864. Mother Emily (do not know maiden name), b1814 1861 at 7 Windsor Terrace, Mile End with sister & 2 children Son James Robinson Grimmett, b1841 in Dalston, London 1861 at 7 Windsor Terrace, Mile End with mother 1871 at 52 Old Gravel Lane with wife 1881 at 44 Tolly Street, Bethnal Green with brother & 3 sons Daughter Matilda Alice Grimmett, b1844 in Hackney 1861 at Albert Road, Stepney with Aunt, Uncle & brother 1864 married to John Williams 1871 at 24 Hampden Road, Islington with husband 1881 at 24 Hampden Road, Islington with husband & kids Son Edward Walter Grimmett, b1852 in Dalston, London 1861 at Albert Road, Stepney with Aunt, Uncle & sister 1871 at 2 Buckeridge Street, Tower Hamlets with same Aunt & Uncle 1876 married to Maria Hurley 1881 at 14 Carlton Road, Mile End with wife & kids 1981 at 51 Bromley Street, Ratcliff, London with wife & kids Son Alfred Grimmett, b1854 Middlesex 1861 at 7 Windsor Terrace, Mile End with mother 1881 at 44 Tolly Street Bethnal Green with brother I have been unable to find: Proof of the marriage between James & Emily GRO refs for the births of Matilda, Edward or Alfred Any census information for any members of the family prior to 1861. This has become a brick wall of huge proportions for me. Is there anyone out there who fancies a challenge? Thanks in anticipation, Helen |

1851 would answer some Q's - regret I cant help with that for the east london area in question .... I'll have a look at BMDs later - where have you looked besides FreeBMD ? IGI shows these births/christenings to a James and Emlar Grimmet .. 1. EMILY ANNE GRIMMETT - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Birth: 06 NOV 1836 2. EMILY ANNE GRIMMETT - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 22 JAN 1837 Saint Matthew, Bethnal Green, London, England 3. ELIZABETH VICTORIA GRIMMETT - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Birth: 25 MAY 1840 4. ELIZABETH VICTORIA GRIMMETT - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 17 JUN 1840 Saint Matthew, Bethnal Green, London, England |

possibility that Robinson is Emily's maiden, or perhaps Thomas' mother's maiden ... looked for a Robinson to Grimmett marriage in Oxfordshire early 1800s ? Damnit - no IGI marriage batches for Charlbury ... google Oxfordshire FHS and see what records they have ... |

Laird, Aaarghhh!! More siblings I haven't heard of. I started off with just Edward, then found Matilda, then James Robinson and Alfred and now you tell me there is an Emily Ann and an Elizabeth Victoria too! Bethnal Green is certainly the right area. I seem to be adding more bricks to the wall instead of pulling some down! Robinson was the surname of Emily's sister who was living with them in 1861, but she was shown as a widow so I don't think this was Emily's maiden name. The 1851 census info sure would help, but nobody seems to have copy which is name indexed and the addresses from the 1861 either don't exist in 1851 or there are different people living there. Still struggling! By the way - who is Thomas? |

James ! Dont count on those kids .... the mothers name is possibly an anagram of Emily, but the surname fairly unique I would have thought. At least they are from a register extract, not 'an LDS member .... ' It seemed likely there were older kids, given the parents ages .... As I say, try googling for both Oxfordshire and East London Family History societies and see what records are available. Also post on here for general info on East End BMDs .... Best of ! Laird |

Helen - have you tried researching the Cowell family who Edward and Matilda were living with in 1861? Joseph Cowell 37 born Stepney and his wife Caroline age 39 born Bethnal Green. Edward and Matilda are listed as Joseph's nephew and niece (although ancestry's transcription has Matilda down as his servant!) but my guess is that Caroline might be Emily's sister as she was born in Bethnal Green. So if you can find Joseph's marriage to Caroline it MIGHT give you Emily's maiden name. Kate. |

Oh, and on the 1871 census Joseph has a father-in-law 'Samueli Shears' according to the ancestry transcription - image says 'Samuel Shears' father-in-law Widr. 80 UnEmployed born Middlesex Hoxton' (also gives Hoxton as Caroline's birthplace on that one). So Emily's maiden name should be either Shears or Cowell, unless of course I am barking up the wrong tree and Caroline was James' sister? Not very likely if James was born in Oxfordshire, though. Kate. |

Two births from the IGI: EMILY SHEERS Female Event(s): Birth: 25 MAR 1814 Christening: 17 APR 1814 Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, England Parents: Father: SAMUEL SHEERS Family Mother: ANN CAROLINE SHEARS Female Event(s): Birth: 21 JUN 1816 Christening: 14 JUL 1816 Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, England Parents: Father: SAMUEL SHEARS Family Mother: ANN I would bet this is Emily and her sister Caroline, though it means Caroline lied about her age on the censuses, not particularly unusual though. Kate. |
