I am trying to track down my Grandmothers' Parents. I have her birth certificate in 1902 which shows her Father as Cornelius Kain and her Mother Sara Ann Kain formerly Franklin. On the 1901 census Cornelius Kain is shown as aged 47 and single. On my Grandmother's marriage certificate her father is shown as Edward Cornelius Kain a weighbridge porter. On her birth certificate he is shown as a railway porter. She was born at 78 Minories London. The Cornelius Kain on the 1901 census was also living at The Minories. I haven't been able to find a marriage. Someone kindly found a Cornelius Cain (spelt incorrectly) on the 1891 census living at 40 Russell Street with Ellen Cain Wife 40 and a Julia Cain 79 widow. His occupation is also given as a railway porter. I am now in a muddle and am not sure what name I ought to be looking for - Edward Cornelius or Cornelius - but am getting nowhere with either name. Can someone help with a fresh pair of eyes. Many thanks Sue |

Bearing in mind his age, (and hers too probably) and the fact that he appears in the right place in 1901 despite being single, that she was possibly still a Frankin when son was born and they married later |

This could be his marriage to Ellen, from FreeBMD: Marriages Jun 1881 Daysh Mary Ann I Alverstoke 2b 871 KAIN Cornelius Alverstoke 2b 871 Larkins Frederick John C Alverstoke 2b 871 SMITH Ellen Alverstoke 2b 871 And perhaps this is his father's marriage to Julia??? Or some other relative? Or an earlier marriage of his? Marriages Sep 1876 Allen Julia King's N 6c 632 KAIN Cornelius King's N 6c 632 STAIN Arthur King's N 6c 632 Wilcox Emily Phoebe King's N 6c 632 |

Thought of that Jess, I can't find anything. Do you think the 1891 census could be him with a previous wife though - but I can't understand two different christian names on my Grandmother's birth certificate and then her marriage certificate. I do know that when my Grandmother married one of her sons was also named Cornelius. |

Thanks for that Kate - the marriage that you found seems to fit in with the 1891 census - he is shown as being born in St Giles London and the wife as being born in Gosport Hants and I know Alverstoke is in Hampshire. Unfortunately I don't know whether it is my chap with a first wife. Have just rang my Mother who confirmed that my Grandmother had a half sister called Annie - but that is all she knows and unfortunately its Dad's side of the family and they have all passed over. |

I'm getting in a muddle just thinking about it, but in answer to your initial question I think you have to look for both spellings of surname Cain and Kain, and for just Cornelius or Edward Cornelius (or just possibly Cornelius Edward?), to be sure you've looked everywhere. Kate. |

I assume Annie was a Franklin, and older than your grandmother (please dont tell me it gets more complicated!!), any idea how much older? Just wondering if we can spot Annie in 1901 and where.- not that will solve your problem getting too late for me... |

Hi Jess, Annie was a Kain I think - just spoke to Mother again she said that he had one leg and my Grandmother also married a man with one leg. Explained that would not help me at all!!!!!!! Don't know whether Annie was before my Grandmother Daisy Helen Kain born in April 1902. Am being yelled out now to go to bed cause I am being taken to the Chelsea Flower show as a birthday treat and have to be up early to catch the train. Perhaps we can return to this tomorrow night??!! |
