Just to confirm that 'Doll' was often used as a pet name for Doris.........our late next door neighbour was a Doris.......always known as 'Doll' ( on good days!) Rose

OMG - you two are way too fast for me. Can't keep up with you, lol If you could both see the huge smile on my face right now...I never thought I'd have gathered so much info in such a short space of time!! Much appreciation (and a cyber hug for all your hard work) Leah x

Hi Vera That's fabulous - well, it certainly seems to fit the information we have...so 'Doll' could be short for Doris - didn't think of that one! And I'm wondering now if the family name of Clark was originally spelt with an 'E', which was dropped at some point in time. Have never heard of Witchford either - I was presuming that they were a Lambeth family. Perhaps they only moved into Lambeth after marrying. Hey, this is getting exciting!! Right, am off to do a Google on Witchford now, lol. Thank you so much! Roll on payday so I can send off for the certs, lol Cheers - Leah

Ah, thanks for taking the time to look, Tracey. Perhaps they married 1922/23 just before Samuel was born, eh? At least I have a glimmer of hope with the birth entry. Funny how sometimes you can trace some ancestral lines right back to the 1600s and yet with others you hit a brick wall so early on, lol. This is what happens when families are not close - information is scarce. Thanks again - Leah

No sign of a Dorothy marrying a Clark(e). No Dolores Greens at all. Must point out this is only from 1912 to 1920. Perhaps I can look again once you have confirmed her name from the birth record? :)

Tracey That's really nice of you to offer to look for the marriage of his parents. Well, from the birth entry from Vera, it looks like his mother's maiden name was Green. My mum says people called her 'Doll' - so could be a nickname for Dorothy or Dolores...so either a Dorothy or Dolores Green, perhaps? Does that help at all? Thanks again Leah

Thanks for trying, Tracey. Vera - wow - thank you. That looks very hopeful. They've just spelt his surname wrong on the entry (no 'e' on the family name). I will send for this and keep hopeful. Many thanks - very kind of you. Leah x

Sorry, we don't know his mother's maiden name. Sam was my grandfather but my mum doesn't know much about his family as he wasn't close with them and his father died when he was very young so we are not 100% sure of the father's name either as he wasn't mentioned that often, although mum thinks he was also a Samuel William or William Samuel. Sorry, not much help is it?

Hi - would anyone be able to look up a birth for me, please? SAMUEL WILLIAM CLARK (Not sure if the middle name was entered on his cert or not) - born 21 April 1923 in London (possibly Southwark). I can't view the records of 1837online on my PC, so if anyone has any free credits and can view the records, I would be extremely grateful. Regards Leah
