Can someone please look at these two images and tell me what you think.... RG13/4577 Folio 199, Page 42 and Folio 200, Page 43. Richard and Isabella Smith, and their 'children'. The oldest child is down as 19, but the parents are only 33 and 34 respectively. How likely is it that John is theirs? |

I was going to say check John's birth, but with a name like John Smith, you might find it easier to have a gin and tonic! Of course pre 1929 it was legal for a woman to marry at 12 and some girls are physically able to have children then, but it would be quite unusual I think. nell |

There are only 6 John Smiths registered in Leith, but none of them have the middle initial. |

I wonder if Richard married an older woman who had John and Albert, then she died and he married Isabella? Not odd in my family Esta lol |

I was thinking along the same lines as Tracey - that perhaps this was his second marriage. Does seem strange that only one child born in Leith - and there's a big age gap between the two eldest and then the younger ones. But they weren't 12, though. She would have been approx 15 and he 14 when John T was born. I have a few people in my tree who bore children from that age... Leah |

Ahh, yes. That's them Esta. Thanks. Now I'm even more confused! (I hate Smiths!!) Would be nice if I could find a marriage for them too. All I can find, is one to a Margaret White. |

Right, i have two sons in my tree, with what i thought was their mother and step father, her having remarried. 10 years back ,dad is dead and she is a widow with the boys when we get back 10 more it transpires they are with their step mother, as their father is alive, with a different wife, she dies, he remarries and then pops off himself 10 more back i happen across what i now know to be Mum and Dad, The people they were with in 1901 were neither mum nor dad , but step mum and her new husband it transpires. And the birth / marriage certs do substantiate the facts.. jess |

Have just been searching through marriages in Yorkshire for Edward Smith around the 1866 mark. Was checking on each page to see if there were any Ann's listed. This is the only one that came close - but no guarantees they are yours - and no way of telling if these two actually married each other or someone else listed on that page: Name: Edward SMITH Record Type: Marriages Qtr: June Year: 1866 District: Sheffield County: South Yorkshire West Riding of Yorkshire Vol: 9c Pg: 387 (There is an Annie Mappin on same page) Regards Leah |

....and I thought my Williams were bad........LOL Not much of a start I know but if Richard was at home in 1891 he must have 'married' after this date. The first child in 1901 was born 1894 ( Mary D ). So logically you should find the marriage between 1891-1894. John T and Albert MIGHT be Isabella's children but not Richards. I think you will just have to take this one step at a time and hope you don't find yourself going around in cirles. I do wish you bucket loads of luck ( you might need it !! ) Esta Ps.......what was your original question??...............LOL |
