In 1861, I have this family... John Ellam abt 1829 Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England Head Mirfield Yorkshire Carroline Ellam abt 1832 Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England Wife Mirfield Yorkshire Joseph Ellam abt 1853 Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England Son Mirfield Yorkshire George Ellam abt 1855 Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England Son Mirfield Yorkshire >>Clara Ellam abt 1860 Mirfield, Yorkshire, England Daughter Mirfield Yorkshire Rachell Ellam abt 1795 Halifax, Yorkshire, England Mother-in-law Mirfield Yorkshire In 1871, this is how they appear... John Elam abt 1829 Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England Head Mirfield Yorkshire Caroline Elam abt 1831 Fartown, Yorkshire, England Wife Mirfield Yorkshire Joseph Elam abt 1853 Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England Son Mirfield Yorkshire George Elam abt 1855 Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England Son Mirfield Yorkshire >>Mary Elam abt 1861 Mirfield, Yorkshire, England Daughter Mirfield Yorkshire Alice Elam abt 1863 Mirfield, Yorkshire, England Daughter Mirfield Yorkshire Ann Elam abt 1867 Mirfield, Yorkshire, England Daughter Mirfield Yorkshire Walter Elam abt 1870 Mirfield, Yorkshire, England Son Mirfield Yorkshire In 1881 and 1891, the child born in 1861 is Clara again. Could Mary be Clara? I can only find BMD records for Clara, who dies in 1900, unmarried. I cannot find anything for Mary. Your thoughts please.

Tracy - it could be that Mary was born after the 1861 census and that in 1871, Clara was away, perhaps at school, or it could be that they are the same person, perhaps Clara Mary or Mary Clara. I would try to find birth registration(s) if I were you, to help sort it out. Not sure whether it would be covered on Yorkshire BMD. When you say you can find BMD records for Clara, do you mean you have found her birth and death, or just her death? And did she have a middle name? Kate.

I have the birth registration. She's only listed as Clara. I couldn't find a Clara in 1871 that wasn't with another family. There was one born a few months before mine, but I know where she was. YorkshireBMD only cover Leeds and Hull I think lol Lib - I was wondering that as well, but how does Clara sound like Mary?

If he only heard the 'air' bit and not the beginning/end sound it's an easy mistake. nell
