I badly need help to establish I am looking at the right person. I have a marriage in 1877 between a Adam Muller and Emily Kemp daughter of Jesse Kemp (Coachman) , then I have a birth cert for 1857 of Emily Kemp father Jesse Kemp (Coachman) mother Mary Ann Kemp nee Sperring .I just got the marriage cert for 1857 between a Jesse Kemp (Coachman ) and a Mary Sperring father William Sperring (Millwright) problem is I went to the rootsweb site as directed from here Thank you very much it is fascinating, but the Mary Sperring c 1833 died in 1849 and according to rootsweb had no children ,unless I read it wrong, please help me confirm it is the right Mary thanks

I have ancestors from midsummer norton and have found a wonderful website just google Somerset Coalfield Connections and you get through to Roots web. I found two pages of Sperlings including census entries for William and Grace but was unable to find her maiden name. If you find any Blacker connections let me Know.

Valerie, Just a small tip, have you looked on the Family Search IGI? I found a William Sperring, born 1770 Midsommer Norton, father James Sperring and Elizabeth. This could be your William`s father and grandfather. Sorry could not find a birth or marriage for your William. As Anne mentioned the Somerset Coalfield Connection site is a wonderful for looking for ancestors. Elizabeth

The roots web site is I think copied from the parish records and people's own research. It does not include details of people who moved away from the village unless someone has added them. My grandmother is there but not my uncle or father. Incidently William was only a millwright on one census. He seems to have been working as a carpenter in 1841 and 1861. 1851 resident south of the brook William Sperring head 63 Millwright Chilcompton som Ann Sperring daughter u 27 laundress Sarah Sperring daughter u26 laundress Mary Sperring 18 laundress Eliza Sperring 16 school mistress Francis Sperring gson 1 1861 Silver Street William Sperring 76 carpenter (deaf) living with his son on law Joseph Taylor and his daughter Eliza and their children Annie, George and Kate. I have his death on 26th January 1867 when he must have been about 80 a good age in those days.

I also have the 1841 census resident south of the brook William Sperring 51 carpenter Grace Sperring 42 Ann Sperring 17 Sarah Sperring 12 Mary Sperring 7 Eliza Sperring 6 I have Grace's burial on 26th December 1849 aged 53 in Midsummer Norton. Francis seems to have been Ann's son. He was baptised on 26th August 1849 and he is recorded as the son of a single woman. He arrived just in time for his grandmother to see him.

I keep finding Sperrings. I found another son for Eliza and Joseph, baptised on 31st October 1862. Joseph Garibaldi Taylor which I think takes the biscuit. (time of the Italian war of independence.
