I will be very grateful if someone would kindly look around GAWSWORTH for William Green, a Yeoman/Farmer, aged about 74 ish (born c 1797). He died in 1878 aged 81, calling himself a Yeoman and at his death was living with Edna Hammond and Mary Slater in Gawsworth. I would be interested in any other William Green, also farmer, of the same sort of age - I don't yet know if I am dealing with one William or two. Thankyou. Olde Crone |

Thankyou for looking, Christine - this man is a mystery. I can find the baptism of only one William Green in the timescale. He marries an Ann, they have 8 or 9 children, and at all their baptisms he is described as a Labourer of Gawsworth. But I have the Will of William Green, a Yeoman of Gawsworth, died 1878 aged 81. He leaves everything to his Grandson, William Shaw. A Mary Green married a William Shaw in 1843, her father was William Green - no occupation given. They have a child, William Shaw. Both William Shaws are on the 1881 desribing themselves as retired farmers.William Shaw senior has the wrong wife!(Should be Mary, unless she died) William and Ann had a Mary, born 1820. I think I have two parallel families, one of William the Labourer and one of William the Yeoman - how could an illiterate labourer become a Yeoman? But I cannot find anything to prove there are two families not one!GRRRRR. Thankyou anyway! Olde Crone. |

Oh, thankyou everybody! I thought this was dead in the water. Hmm - looks like my William the Yeoman was a fibber - wonder if you could just choose to call yourself a Yeoman and no-one would challenge you? The son Mark clinches it - my William-the-Labourer had a son Mark born 1838. William the Labourer is living next door to Edna Hammond and Mary Slater. What kind of cruel coincidence would it be if a totally unrelated William the Yeoman, exactly the same age, went to live with them? This now makes me wonder if Edna and Mary are his daughters - but why doesn't he say that in his Will? Oooh! William the Labourer has a daughter Eleanor, who is transcribed in the PR as ELNA - thats not a million miles from EDNA, is it?? No mistranscription on this family name would surprise me - I myself misread an early PR entry for Daniel Green as Daniel Gubbins!!!! But thankyou all - I now have some addresses to play about with - none on the Wills I have. Hopefully the addresses will turn up something in the Rates Book, or some Farm Leases etc. Olde Crone |

Isobel Brilliant brilliant brilliant! Could it possibly say MOLLARDS? That is the name of the farm my proven ancestors were living at in 1861 (John's son, Thomas). We don't talk about Samuel - he married a Rathbone, which sends Merry and Jess into a dark room, for some reason!! Thankyou soooo much! Olde Crone |

Thanks again, Isobel - thinks: maybe I read Mollards and it really said Mallards?! I have just been combing Cheshire BMDs to find the death of Ann Green, between 1871 and 1878. I found two, one died 1876 aged 75 and one died 1871 aged 70. Looks like I will have to get both of them as I am beginning to have an awful suspicion that there might have been two couples named William and Ann, both labourers, plus a possible William the Yeoman and unknown. I have found eight children bapt to 'William and Ann, labourer of Gawsworth' but only the youngest three appear on any census. The older five could all be married I suppose, but any suitable marriages all occur after 1841. Going to bed now, got indigestion with all those Greens. Olde Crone |
