I would really love to trace my family tree but I have a learning difficult which makes things confusing for me and hard to understand. I would like to enrol on a free family history class at my local library but I am worried that I would find this very hard and too much information to take in. What sort of person could I ask to trace my family tree with me? any suggestions please or solutions. Regards Richard

People on here will help you, Richard. I am more than willing if you want to give it a go We'd need a starting point though. who do you know of the might be around in 1901 ? we can offer help to look for yourself (by telling you where) or look up some (not all of it) for you. What you really need to resit doing is paying someone to do it for you- searching out your roots does involve spending some money, but needn't cost a fortune Jess x

Is there any personal researchers that do not charge very much?

Hi Richard To date you have recieved an awful lot of information, help and advice from members of the board. Print all that information off from your various threads and ask a member of your family to help you put your family tree together with ALL the information you have. I would strongly advice that you take a family member with you to the library ( hopefully one that is as interested in their roots as you are) It's much more nicer to have some one to share this with - most of us have other halfs who think we are bonkers!! Much happiness Debi

Richard sent me a private message. Ethel Berry born 1900 Wednesbury. this is probably her on the 1901 census Emily Berry abt 1871 Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England Wife Wednesbury Staffordshire Ethel Berry abt 1900 Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England Daughter Wednesbury Staffordshire Riemons Berry abt 1898 Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England Son Wednesbury Staffordshire William Berry abt 1871 Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, England Head Wednesbury Staffordshire Elizabeth Pitt abt 1834 Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England Mother-in-law Wednesbury Staffordshire ------------------------------------------------- It suggests to me that Ethels mother was called Emily Pitt before she was married.that may or may not be the case. bear with me, not gone far!

OK . I cannot find one born in Wednesbury. Do you have the reference for their marriage?

The Bag

The Bag Report 12 Sep 2005 12:42

Their marriage ref (which Richard sent me by PM) Jun 1919 West Bromwich 6b 1016 . Ok Richard what you need to do is this. Send for the marriage cert (someone will help you if you need them to by telling you the address etc) This will tell us Georges fathers name and how old he was when he married you Ethel Berry. There is no other way to find out who Georges father was unless you do this. When we know who his dad is then we can find out which one is him on the 1901 census and then we can start going back for you. jess x

Jess, Is there a Geeorge Brookes born in West Bromwich?

The Bag

The Bag Report 12 Sep 2005 13:21

There might be, and i could post them here for you but again we'd need to know his fathers name to know which is the right one. the marriage cert really is the best way to go. Think of it like this.Where were you born? Do you still live there. if you met a girl that lived somewhere else do you think you'd get married where she was brought up or where you were? Where you Get married can have all or nothing to do with where you were born. get that marriage certificate will you, please? jess x

would also recommend joining a local Family History Society. The wealth of knowledge of members is invaluable. The one I belong to ,yearly subs is only £9 ,so not too much & we get monthly meetings with interesting geneolgy talks ,& we get coach visits to the record centres including Kew . Shirley

An Olde Crone Report 12 Sep 2005 22:30

Richard I am glad to see you haven't given up! Please remember to answer your posts on the thread you have started - that way everyone knows what has been found already. You might also consider going to your nearest LDS Family History Centre. The help they give is free and they have access to all sorts of information. The Centres are run by Volunteers though - and they will not do your research for you, but they will help you to do it for yourself. You can find your nearest LDS Centre by going onto their Website (FamilySearch). If you have a problem finding it, just tell me which County you are living in (don't post your actual address) and I will have a look for you. Good Luck Olde Crone
