Could someone please have a look for John Henry SANDY and his family in these censuses for me? He was born in Brighton or Broadwater, Worthing around 1835 and, at the time of his marriage in 1862, he was a Telegraph Man. I am trying to identify his parents and siblings. On IGI, it simply says that his mother was Sophia SANDY, but he may have been brought up (at least) by John SANDY and his wife Martha (nee CAMIES). On his marriage cert, one of the witnesses is 'L Sandy' - I have no candidates for this, other than guessing that it may be a sibling. Thanks for anything that you find. Kind regards Jane |

Wow! You guys are really f-a-s-t! Thank you for this lot. I have some questions/comments: Claire - don't understand the 1861 info you posted as first reply. Is this an entire household or just index details? Does it give a street address? I agree that 'COWIES' and 'CAMIES' could indeed be the same ... transcribers often see the ghastly old writing in different ways. Also, Claire, it is intriguing how a 'COWIES' lady has a 'SANDY' nephew ... supposing she's not married at that point. And that her sister is an 'EDERIDGE' - assume married, absent husband? I am almost certain that Almsford should read Alresford. This 'new' Charles SANDY, nephew, is VERY interesting indeed ... must have been John's brother. I wonder if Mary was Martha's sister and was looking after the boys on Census night? In which case, where were Martha & John senior? Maybe they had expired by then? But I have found no death records - apart from (on FreeBMD) Martha SANDY in Brighton in 1855 which could well be her. In which case, by 1861, the kids could certainly have been 'parked' on another female family member. Jeanette - John Henry SANDY married Emily HART (John Junior; John SANDY (senior) married Martha CAMIES in Brighton on 16 April 1825 (i.e. before Civil Registration began) - I have a certificate and listing from the Sussex Marriage Index, respectively, for these events. Do either of you have access to 1851 Census for Brighton? This may be more definitive in terms of who JH's parents/siblings were. You really are very kind people - thank you again for your time and efforts. Regs Jane PS: Hope neither of you has got indigestion after this lot!! |

So this is an entire 'household' then, Jeanette? Terminus Street is good - I think the railway station is there! Useful for JH's later career. Pushing my luck, can you find a Sophia SANDY in 1861? She should have been around Brighton still. This is the lady I have 'earmarked' for JH's mother. Regs Jane PS: Do you have access to 1851? |

Jeanette, Thanks for this. I shall be on the edge of my seat for that 1851 Census now - I really do think that will hold the answer. Unless of course, you have the 1841 Census already? (I know that one is a b**** to read - having bought the CD for Norfolk, I wished I hadn't! Look forward to hearing from you again - if you are able to turn up any more on my SANDYs. This really is jolly nice of you ... Jane x |

Jeanette, So it was a kind of boarding house I guess. When it says 'View Record', does that mean there is more info available? Regs Jane |
