I have a John Meakins, born about 1818 in Potterspury. In 1852 he married Caroline Green (Potterspury 3b 88). John is mistranscribed as Menkins. In 1853 (15th July) they had a son, also named John. Can't find any of them on the 1861 or 1871 census. in 1881, John Jr is in Stony Stratford. Any help in findin them would be greatly appreciated ! Paul

sorry ! Northants/Bucks border. Could be either. Curiously, after looking for this for hours (and on previous occasions), I think I've just found John Jr in 1861, aged 7, in the local Union Workhouse, mistranscribed as Meekins.

Heather, there are TONS of Meakins in the area, just can't find these three :)

thought the wife was Caroline?

The wife is Caroline, yes. I dont have her age, but I'd estimate she was born between 1815-1825.

Jess, not sure where you're finding all the Caroline Meakins' I've just searched 1861 on Ancestry using Caroline and Potterspury and I only find one Caroline meakins, and she's the one born in 1852... Paul

sorry, might have been flitting from one year to another.

thats OK, let you off :) The only Caroline Meakins' that I can find (with a keyword of potterspury) in 1861 or 1871 were born too late - 1852/1865. Of course it's possible that one or both parents died before 1861, and that could of course explain why John Jr appears to be in the workhouse in 1861...

Although you would think with all the relatives they seem to have in the area the kids would have been farmed out.

yes, that happens sometimes too, I've found several children from related families 'visiting' on census night. I'm pretty sure I've found the son, John, in 1861 and 1871 now. Still can't find any sign of the parents though.
