i am trying to find the parents of a JOSEPH ROBERTSHAW born c1827 bolton(i think bolton in richmond ) yorkshire he married an ELIZABETH born c1826 aston yorkshire in the march qtr 1848 in sheffield they had six children WILLIAM c1850 SARAH c1853 THOMAS c1856 JOHN c1859 GEORGE c1862 and LUCY c1864 all born in sheffield on the 1861 census they are listed as living at 95 eldon street ecclesall bierlow sheffield and JOSEPH is listed as a stone mason can anyone find his parents many thanx kimx

I thought Bolton was Lancs??? There are 2 in Lancs but dont seem to match up. Check them out too though.

hi heather i to thought bolton was lancs but says on census bolton yorkshire so could possbly be either ? on the 1861 census lists him as 34 so he must have been born 1826/27 ive got to go niow so please dont think ive deserted you got to get my three kids to bed !!! thanx for all your help kimx

Is there an 1841 census for that area? You could put a message up asking for him as he should be with mum and dad at that time?

Have you got the birth certificate for one of the children, perhaps Lucy? That will give you her mother's maiden name. You can then look for the marriage to Joseph and THAT certificate will hopefully tell you Joseph's father's name and occupation.

These are the following 'Bolton' entries on the Yorkshire 1851 census Index: Bolton Abbey in Skipton Bolton upon Dearne in Doncaster Bolton Percy in Tadcaster Bolton in Pocklington Castle Bolton in Leyburn Bolton upon Swale in Richmond. Both the 1841 and the 1851 are available on disc ......... but without an address, no one will volunteer to trawl through thousands of pages looking for a 'possible' family. Have you checked the IGI for a possible MARRIAGE of this couple ? Dancer :-)

There is a Bolton Abbey in Yorkshire. I don't know the area so don't know if there is also a nearby village or town.

firstly sorry for not being around to answer your questions yday shall we just say 3 hospitals 9hrs and numerous tests on my 4yr old son we finally got home....no i dont have any certificates whatsoever for JOSEPH ROBERTSHAW all i do know is that ive got him listed as being from bolton in yorkshire probably in bolton abbey as suggested above also as far as im aware bolton abbey in skipton is in yorkshire he must be from yorkshire as 'all' the family in my tree on my mums side are from sheffield/rotherham in yorkshire could you give me any suggestions on what are where to go with this next guys i dont know what the IGI is and i dont have any credits left to look on the 1841 census many thanx for all your help kimx

Firstly, hope your boy is ok! The IGI is the familysearch website which gives some parish records. I have given you the available parish records on there for births - perhaps you should check which one is nearest 'Bolton'. As he had children after 1837, you can buy their birth certificate for £7 and get the mothers maiden name. From that info you could look up their marriage - if they did marry - and send off for that certificate to get both of their fathers names and occupations and where they were living at the time. You ought to spend a little time looking at the homepage of this site which does give you the basic info for searching and some links to help you.
