Right i am trying a different angle on Joseph Sewell. I have looked on the 1901 census and found one that looks a reasonably close match. It states Joseph Sewell age 30 occupation Carman all Round ( this is the profession stated on my nans wedding certificate of her father J Sewell). However the 1901 cenesus says he is married to a Millicent and has a daughter called Millicent. My nans mother was Amelia Stafford. The mystery deepens as there was a sisiter of my nans whom my mum called auntie Doll but we have just discovered from her now rather elderly son that her actual name was Millicent Amelia wait for it Bull. The millicent seems a little too coincidental but it probably is. What i need is Year or DOB for Millicent Amelia Bull (have looked but cant find) or Miilicent Sewell. Also marriage for Joseph Sewell to Millicent ? or Joseph Sewell to Amelia Stafford. I have marriage to Amelia Bull but maybe this is not correct so i am trying all different angles. Sorry this is so long winded but it is very confusing!!! Many Thanks Karen |

Hi This is only going to confuse you now. I found a Joseph S*well born 1865 born High Easter at his grandmas house in the 1891 census he is with a brother Samuel S*well born 1863. Granny name is Jamima Witney born 1813 High Easter. Now jumped back to the 1871 census with a different year of birth and found him take a look below Joseph Sewell abt 1822 High Easter, Essex, England Head High Easter Essex Albert Whitney abt 1869 High Easter, Essex, England Son-in-law High Easter Essex Joseph Whitney abt 1867 High Easter, Essex, England Son-in-law High Easter Essex Lucy A Whitney abt 1862 High Easter, Essex, England Daughter-in-law High Easter Essex Mary Whitney abt 1838 High Easter, Essex, England Servant High Easter Essex Samuel Whitney abt 1864 High Easter, Essex, England Son-in-law High Easter Essex If you want the image just send me a PM with your email address Wendy |

I know of girls called Millicent and Amelia who are both shortened to Millie. Perhaps your relative was called Millie and the official form-fillers assumed it was Millicent or Amelia? nell |

Yes a single Joseph Sewell. The only reason i thought that maybe the marriage was the right one was because of the census info saying Millicent not Amelia. But finding him as a child is proving difficult. Have to sign off now as daughter wants to do her homework. Thanks to all so far.... Will try and resume later or tomorrow. |

I think this is your Joseph from the 1871 census: Joseph Sewell abt 1822 High Easter, Essex, England Head High Easter Essex Albert Whitney abt 1869 High Easter, Essex, England Son-in-law High Easter Essex >>>> Joseph Whitney abt 1867 High Easter, Essex, England Son-in-law High Easter Essex Lucy A Whitney abt 1862 High Easter, Essex, England Daughter-in-law High Easter Essex Mary Whitney abt 1838 High Easter, Essex, England Servant High Easter Essex Samuel Whitney abt 1864 High Easter, Essex, England Son-in-law High Easter Essex from 1861: Mary Ann Joyce abt 1837 High Easter, Essex, England Servant High Easter Essex Joseph Sewell abt 1832 High Easter, Essex, England Head High Easter Essex The address on both occassions is LOFTY GREEN......... next door to them in 1861 and 1871 is a William JOYCE and Jemima WHITNEY. Maybe Mary Whitney is Mary Ann Joyce and the children are Joseph's but as he & Mary are listed as UnMarried they have recorded the children under her name??? Interestingly in 1881: John Eve abt 1858 Pleshey, Essex, England Visitor Lofty Green, High Easter, Essex, England William Joyce abt 1810 High Easter, Essex, England Head Lofty Green, High Easter, Essex, England Albert Whitney abt 1868 High Easter, Essex, England Grandson Lofty Green, High Easter, Essex, England Jemima Whitney abt 1813 High Easter, Essex, England Housekeeper Lofty Green, High Easter, Essex, England >>>>>Joseph Whitney abt 1866 High Easter, Essex, England Grandson Lofty Green, High Easter, Essex, England Lucy Whitney abt 1862 High Easter, Essex, England Granddaughter Lofty Green, High Easter, Essex, England Mary Ann Whitney abt 1881 High Easter, Essex, England Unknown Lofty Green, High Easter, Essex, England Samuel Whitney abt 1864 High Easter, Essex, England Grandson Lofty Green, High Easter, Essex, England 1891 and who should appear in Lofty Green in 1891 with the Jemima WITNEY as a Grandson........ Joseph and his brother Samuel now recorded as SEWELL: Sewell, Joseph abt 1865 High Easter, Essex, England Grandson High Easter Essex Sewell, Samuel abt 1863 High Easter, Essex, England Grandson High Easter Essex Witney, Jamima abt 1813 High Easter, Essex, England Head High Easter Essex Mystery solved LOL So born illegitamate father was Sewell but could have been reg as the following: Births Mar 1867 Witney Joseph Dunmow 4a 389 |
