I am still looking for my great great great grandparents, Ambrose de Grussa and Catherine Elizabeth Hopkins' marriage for years. I just got 1851 census of Ambrose de Grussa (Digrussee) in Middlesex that he was single from Switzerland. I just received Catherine's death certificate that she died on Nov 1872 at St Saviour, Surrey. Her wrong spelling of surname was Dez Grusso. I have their censuses. And their first child was born around 1854 at Newington, Surrey. Could anyone please help me to find their marriage certificate? Thanks, Steven from Melbourne, Australia.

Presumably therefore the marriage was between 1851 and 1854. It does not appear to be on FreeBMD, but that is incomplete. If you look on their coverage charts, you'll see that FreeBMD has virtually no marriages for Jun/Sep/Dec 1851 or for Mar/Sep/Dec 1853. Therefore, if you haven't already done so, you should check these six quarters on 1837online. Richard

Hi Richard, thanks for your time. Yes, I have checked 1837online, FreeBMD and microfilms from my library. All are none. I just found Dez Grusso from FreeBMD last week. There must be somewhere, probably wrong spelling of de Grussa. Regards, Steven.

Hi Eliza, thank you for your time. Yes, I already have Ambrose's death certificate. Yes, they lived together with some children at Newington in 1861 census. Regards, Steven.

Hi Georgina, Catherine's maiden name was Hopkins. Thanks, Steven.

Not all marriage entries found their way to the GRO Index, if you have any idea where they were married, you could always try the local Register Office. Given that there were many Churches within a registration district, most Register Offices are reluctant to do searches because of the time involved, so it would help if you knew the Church. Jennifer

Jennifer, thanks for your advice. I will try to find out about churches. I think there is no birth certificate of their first child, Catherine de Grussa around 1854 in Newington. I thought that it should be same reason as their marriage, too. Thanks again, Steven.

Hi Steven, Have you made a wider search than 1851-1854. I always do a blanket search of at least 5yrs either side of the expected year. My husbands gr-grparents weren't married until 3yrs after his grandma was born!! Took me a long time to find that marriage, as I kept searching they years before she was born. My own parents were married 5yrs before I was born, in years to come, anyone looking for my parents would be way off, if they use my birth year as a starting point! Debbie

Valerie, yes I have seen it from familysearch.org. It was from my great uncle. He told me that he could not find their marriage certificate, too. Carlo (or Charles) was my great great grandfather. One of his children, Alfred was my great grandfather. Deborah, that's interested. I will try to search it to Catherine's death in 1872. Many thanks, Steven.

Maybe they went back to Switzerland to get married? Maybe even the first child was born there too? Just an idea... Richard

Hi Richard, yes, it is possible, I always think about it. Maybe they came back to London after their marriage? Their first chid, Catherine was born in Newington. Her mother Catherine was also born in Newington from 1861 census. So it looks like they had been stayed in Surrey for ever. They might be married in Newington? Thanks, Steven.

Steven - regarding Catherine's birthplace, don't always believe what it says on the census, especially since you haven't found the birth cert to confirm it! My g-g-grandmother always put Steyning, Sussex on the census as her birthplace, and in fact her father was from there so it seemed logical. However, I couldn't find any record of her birth there. Then I later found out that he was in the army, and at around the time of her birth he was stationed in Ireland. Sure enough, I found gggm's birth - in Ireland! Richard
