Hi, Anyone got any ideas to help???? I was adopted in 1972, I was born in Liverpool 14/03/72 to a lady called Rita McLaughlin and my birth name was Marion. My birth mother came across from Ireland with a male who I think was my bith father. Surname O'Rawe???? They stayed in a hotel in Lord Nelson St called Cassons and the adoption was through the Catholic Childrens Society. I have tried to go back to this but there is no longer any listings... Any ideas??? Thanks |

You could go on 1837online.com. For £5 you get 50 units. Adoptions were first listed around 1927 so you could find what you wind on that website. That's the only online facilty I can think of. Other than that if you access to your local library you could always check on Microfiche there. Good Luck. Regards, Kirsten |

www.1837online.com is basically all the Births, Marriages and deaths listed in indexes from 1837 to around 2003. For instance you look for the name you want - i.e you name. Then look for the quatre in which you were born in. You were born in either the January, February, March Quarter, April, May, June Quarter, July, August, September Quarter October, November, December Quarter. So you were born in the January quarter, look under 1972 for the possible name you think your birth father was and you should see all those listed under the name. Next to your name should be the maiden name of your birth mother. This should all tie in. For instance my last name is Gold, so I look under Gold in the quarter (December) I was born, in that year and I should see my name, and my mothers maiden name at the side. It will tell you the area or district you were born in and the volume and page number. You need these two to require a birth certificate. It is a little hard at first but it's really easy to do once you get the hang of it. Just a warning, though, it does become addictive and it does cost money! Hope you understand all my gibberish! Regards, Kirsten |

Catherine, Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly are you trying to do ? find your birth parents ?. I know nothing about adoptions etc, BUT, I do know that if you need help, to find your birth parents then you need to ask this question on the TIPS board. I only suggest this, because there are several people on TIPS who can and DO help with Adoptee's and have been down this road themselves. You will get all the advice, help and support that you need, there are some lovely people on Tips board who will be only too glad to help and point you in the right direction. I do know, that where ever and which ever 'society' dealt with your 'adoption' should have YOUR file, with all the details on, which you ARE entitled to have access to. Ask on TIPS BOARD for more info petal, you will gets loads of help and advice. 1837online is only any use to you, if you are looking for your birth certificate. Since you know most of the information that it would give, then I don't imagine getting the birth cert will help you ?.... but I MAY be wrong. GOOD LUCK Dancer :-) |

I THINK some adoption files MAY have ended up in Southport. ??? There is now a register, that YOU can add YOUR name to (£15 cost) .. and if anyone is looking for YOU, then they have to pay to add theirs against your name. There is also a website, NOT sure of its correct name, but it's something like; connecting parents and children ? The kind people on TIPS Board will help you with information, advice, help, guidance and tons of support and understanding. Elaine ;-) Just as an after thought; could your local Social Services not help you ? They may be able to trace your file for you if nothing else. They do offer a councelling service as well. |

The local social services dept would have had to be involved in your adoption, and if you contact them they should be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck. nell |

Can I ask how you seem to have quite a bit of info already? Did you have a middle name at birth? Theresa? Sam |

COntact your local social servicesadoption section and ask to speak to an adoption councillor. Catholic adoption records are harder to access although if they exist it is easier fro the councillor to trace them than you - they know the nooks and crannies! You already seem to have most of the info that your file would contain though, so you may have already done this. Do you have you PRE adoption birth cert? That would be your first move. Jess |

Hi Catherine, Sammy MAY have found your birth entry in the indexes, to find your middle name, .... which means you can apply for your birth cert, if you haven't already got it. I'm sure Sammy will come back and give you the details if you need them. I notice that Jess has added to this thread .... if anyone can help you Jess can babe. She has her own thread on the Tips Board. Go and have a look at it and see how many people are in the same situation as you. Elaine :-) |

catherine - when you say you cant trace the adoption agency - you dont need to, the social worker will do that for you. what you can do is send for your ORIGINAL birth cert. this will name your mother, and MAY name your father |

Catherine, You can go to your own local social services, they will liaise with the social services which dealt with your adoption. This is the official webpage from the General Register Office to do with adoptions: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/adoptions/ It has lots of useful information. Liz x |

I have cut'n'pasted this from the GRO website: Adoptions Information on access to birth details If you were adopted before 12 November 1975 and reside in England or Wales You are required to attend an informal interview with an approved adoption worker. This can be someone at either your local Social Services, at the General Register Office in Southport or, under certain circumstances, at the agency that handled your adoption. You can also choose to see an adoption worker at another local authority but you will need to give a reason for your choice (for example, perhaps if you work for your own local authority) otherwise they may not agree to see you. Why do I have to see an approved adoption worker? Before 12 November 1975, many parents and adopters were led to believe that the adopted child would never be able to find out their original name or the names of their parents. These arrangements were made in good faith. However, when it became possible for adopted people to discover their original details all this changed and it is important that adopted people understand what this might mean, not only for themselves but also for others. What will happen at the interview? You will be given a form showing your birth name, birth mothers name and your district of birth. You can use this form to apply for a certified copy of your original birth entry. You will also be given a form CA6 to be sent to the court that handled your adoption. This form will authorise them to release the name of the adoption agency or social services involved in your adoption, if there was one and if the court still holds this information. There is also the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have with a professional experienced in the complex issues surrounding adoption searching. Once you have received the name of the organisation involved in your adoption you will be able to contact them to see if your adoption file still exists. If it does you may be allowed sight of your file. The form CA6 does not have the authority to ask the court to release any other information they may have regarding your adoption. Applicants will not be given a copy of their original birth certificate at this interview but will be given a form CA5 application form to complete. |
