Thanks Louise, I darent ask for any more variations on the look up. I guess I will wait till good old ancestry bring out the 1841. Am I the only one who is tight on spending on hubbys side?! Its just Im dead ends all round with the 'important' line of my lot so thought Id do a bit of a homage to hubbys lot. But such a common name on that side, isnt it.

Hi, thats so kind of you. In the 1851 he is alone and recorded as widower. Name: William Martin Age: 36 Estimated birth year: abt 1815 Household: View other family members Gender: Male Where born: Plymouth Civil parish: Southwark St Saviour County/Island: Surrey Country: England Street address: View Image Condition as to marriage: View Image Occupation: View Image Disability: View Image Source information: HO107/1558 Registration district: St Saviour Southwark Sub-registration district: St Saviour ED, institution, or vessel: 14 Folio: 388 Page: 13 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 81 GSU Number: 174791 In 1861 he is with a wife called Elizabeth - cant find marriage In 1871 with a wife called Ellen - cant find marriage In 1881 he has outlived yet another one and is with a couple of the kids. This is hubbys side - you are quite right a marriage cert would get his dads name but with such a common name I would need to find the wives names first too which would mean taking a chance on the kids certs. Not wanting to sound mean, but Id rather spend a lot of £7s on my side!!! It may be he was in London (Surrey) in 1841. Very kind thought though, thank you.

Heather, Have you get the reference for the 1851 census. I have tried to locate him - without any success. Does he have any kids with him in the 1851 census? Have you located the marriage to either subsequent wife. Either marriage certificate may provide details of his father. The baptisms also record father's occupaton so it may be possible to find his baptismal record for you. I have the DFHS Deanery of the Three Towns CD which has baptisms 1813 - 1837 for Plymouth and surrounds. It also has marriages (sadly occupation is not listed). Kind regards Pete

Many thanks Trace, well I think that as he was a tailor we can assume he did an apprenticeship and would have been in his tailoring job by the age of 25. So I guess he must have moved away from Devon by 1841. Many many thanks for all your efforts.

I didn't check St Andrew cos I didn't see it. There were 3 Williams. One was a Turner, one a Labourer and the other a Tin Plate Worker.

Plymouth comes under Charles the Martyr on BO (I just checked lol) There are 3, but none are Tailors. One is a Carpenter, the other 2 are Labourers.

Gone back to looking at hubbys side as Im dead ended on mine. Can anyone please see his GGFx2 William Martin born 1815 in Plymouth, a tailor. Ive just been looking at him back to 1851 and blimey the guy must have married 3 times. He is living in Bermondsey by the 1851, alone and a widower. By 1861 he his married again with 3 kids and by 1871 he is on to wife no. 3! Be grateful to see if he is still in Plymouth in 1841, I guess possibly with wife No. 1 but hopefully with parents. Many thanks. Nite nite guys, been a pleasure being in your company again! Time for much needed beauty sleep now.
