Hi Donna , this is what it says on Scotland's People Old Parish Registers IMAGES Images of OPR’s are not yet available on this site. Due to their physical layout, the task of linking images to the correct indexes is proving problematic. Progress updates will be posted in Availability. However, you can order an extract of the relevant entry. See Extract Orders Extracts will usually be a facsimile image of the register entry on extract stationery. A transcript of the entry will also be issued if the filmed image is unreadable or otherwise illegible. Please note that in many cases the entry will contain little information over and above that contained in the index entry. See Extracts for information on what you might expect to find on an extract from the OPR records As it says, there's usually not much more info on the actual image from what you probably already got. Hope that helps Christine

Hi Val On the death cert i have mother and father but could they be wrong....as i can find no marriage for these two....i dont know if mothers maiden name is correct...the son of Robert Reid signed the death cert so did he give the info on his grandparents....or could it of been mispelt. Sorry keep banging my head against a brick wall and trying to find other possibilities...Thank you for responding Donna

You're right, the parents' names on the death cert can certainly be wrong as it depends on whether the informant knew the names! For example, one of my rellies' death certs says her father was James Ferrier, but he was definitely Alexander Ferrier (James was her uncle), and the informant was described as her 'nephew' (actually the husband of her great-niece, so not expected to have very good knowledge of her family tree!) Kate.

Donna I sent for a marriage certificate for 1830 because there was no Image on Scotlands people and all it said was the bride & grooms names, of this parish and the date of the marriage. I am not sure if the births hold any more info because on some old parish records only the father was named. If you post some name's we may be able to help. Georgina.

Georgina

Georgina Report 22 Nov 2005 15:23

Hi Donna, yes a Thatcher is a roof maker. What date did Robert die? There is this entry on the IGI which could be him.... ROBERT REID Male Event(s): Birth: 18 JUN 1830 High Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland Christening: Death: Burial: Parents: Father: JOHN REID Mother: MARY MELVILL Georgina.

Hi Georgina Robert died in 1899 April 15th in Western Infirmary Scotland informant was his 2nd son William Reid. They lived at 10 Kelvinside Ave Glasgow....he died in an accident at work...and there was a public enquiry...and going by his age id say both of his parents (Roberts) would have died a while before....is this enough Georgina...i have Robert going back to 1861 with his wife and family but no trace of his parents...thanks in advance Donna

Donna if you think this could be your family then the mother was Mary Melvil/Melvill because I have checked their births on the IGI. Georgina.

Val Report 22 Nov 2005 16:54

Hi Donna yes sometimes the spelling could be wrong or like my gr grans marriage certificate her mother was down as Russell as maiden name couldn't find marriage for Russell so I looked for her death totally different maiden name but parents names not there only last names but I worked it out by her age when died but they sometimes added an A where they shouldn't but I figured it out by her age and father's name and if the mothers name nearly right added an A there as well but yes there was a marriage for the maiden name on death. I found all her kids marriages after that and Russell was all of them except the last child to marry when I discovered her half sister turned up in Glasgow right beside where she lived

Hi Val Thanks for your input...i am learning more often than not that you cannot trust anything written down....and that back then family did not know as much as you would think about their own family...but i suppose that depends on how close knit a family is or how big ,so you lose track...Donna

You could always go to a Latter Day Saints Church and request the microfilm of those Old Parish records, and look up the 'original' yourself from the film, if you have the time. There's a small hire charge to pay for postage of the correct film. Sometimes a birth notice will state who the child was named after, and the profession of the respective fathers-in-law will be on a marriage notice. And sometimes nothing new will be there!
