Also received a pm from Verna. For the benefit of others who may be following the thread, I'm sure she won't mind me re-posting bits of it here: ... thanks for all the help ... Looks like the name Lauback was changed to Lawback during the first world war and possibly garndad changed his name as Nan didn't like it. Does seem there is a strong link to Newcatle as well as London. I do know there was a musical instrument factory involved somewhere and that great gran sang opera. Grandad was sent to live with an Aunt? in Norfolk at some point don't know how long for. G. Gran killed in the blitz no details on G. Grandad. ... Once again thanks. |

From the IGI: EUGEN RICHARD LUDWIG LAUBACH Birth: 09 AUG 1868 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland Parents: Father: WILHELM CHRISTIAN LAUBACH Mother: EMILY BROWN Note the father's name! Also, Ludwig is the German variant of Louis. QED? Wilhelm & Emily's marriage is also on the IGI, and there's stuff on the net about Wilhelm - he was a photographer in Edinburgh apparently. Just Google his name. Richard |

Yes but if there's a William Christian S Lauback AND a William Christian S Laubach both born in Sept qtr 1896, I'll eat my hat! There's only 2 LAUBACK events on the whole of freeBMD: one of them is a mistranscription (image has LAUBACH), and the other is entered under both spellings, so presumably whoever compiled the index in the first place couldn't decide what the spelling was in that case. |

Newcastle area is looking good, Jess! Found this marriage which may be relevant. Verna - could Edith's maiden name have been Forder rather than Forster? If so, then this could be the marriage: Marriages Mar 1893 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forder Edith Annie Newcastle T 10b 143 Kelley Eva Newcastle On Tyne 10b 143 Laubach Eugen Richard L Newcastle T. 10b 143 Miller James Hart Newcastle T. 10b 143 In which case, the first census find above would tie in, if both parents were using their second names? |

We are trying to trace our grandfathers' tree but have drawn a complete blank. Have lots of info but nothing comes back. Born 2nd August 1896 William Christian Samuel Lauback in Grater London or Essex. The problem is he changed his surname by deed poll, have the document in 1920 to Beacham and we can't find anything on both names. He also changed his birth certificate to the new name have that but not the original. Married Nan, Jan 1st 1921 in Chester-le Street Co. Durham, Agnes Jane Critchley. Was Chief engineer at Kimblesworth or maybe Nettlesworth pit till he retired. Had a brother Harry, two sisters Mona and Vi, she lived in Dagenham possible further two siblings. He was in WW1 in France and had something to do with the Gurkhas. We have tried all these lines and nothing back, like he didn't exist. Feel sure he would be on a census after his marraige as he was very hot on details! His father was of German extraction that's why he changed his name after the war. G. Grandfather Loius Richard Lauback married to Edith Eunice nee Forster with all these details you would think we would hit on something. Any help would be very appreciated need to sleep! |
