(unreadable) he is a general labourer! *update** found DOB for Job on 1851 census as c1828 (see below) Image also says 'wife absent' could she be away having James born c1871?? Could Rosannah be 'Rose' as in 1881?? Hi Lib, do you think that Job could be the eldest brother and was therefore put down as the Head, and the rest as sons and daughters of the absent mother. Although it says wife, if you look at his date of birth everything else doesn't add up. Gloria

Dear Gloria and all Sorry for brief pitstop (have done all my Christmas cards Gloria!!) however have now left office and am at home so here goes. This is a long and complicated story but to cut things short.....my ggg grandfather William Goater married an Irish girl Eleanor McGreal while in the army in Ireland in 1846. They later went to Malta where they had a son (Henry - later known as Henry Kingston Goater (all will become clear) William G. died in the Crimea after the battle of Inkermann. I have his date of death but can't find out any more. He is commemorated on the regiment's war memorial in St George's Church, Reading (only found that out last week, very exciting!!). Anyway after William G.'s death Ellen marries William Kingston (too many Williams in this story) supposedly a fellow soldier. They travel around England and eventually end up in Bolton, Lancs - where Henry marries and has a family and they have a second son John William (see what I mean?!). Born c. 1862 not sure where. It appears that Ellen dies in 1878 in Hampshire (aged only 48) and shortly after William marries again. William K. dies in Bolton and John William K. vanishes. However the point of the story is that I contacted William G's regiment to find out more about him - place of birth etc and after 2 generous donations they offered to go to Kew and find out more about the 3 Williams. Info came back today and I was extremely excited. No info on William G. - very disappointing or on William K. but lots on John W. K. until I get to the last sheet - next of kin mother Ann Kingston in Berkshire - and not Ellen!! I think its the wrong man and I don't want to make it fit if it isn't right. The info is wondeful though - I can almost picture him - hair brown, eyes hazel, even describes his tattoos. He was almost real for a minute there and I am totally gutted.
